Marquette University Poll: Obama 50-45 over Rmoney in Wisconsin

With less than a week until the primary in the Wisconsin Senate race, former Gov. Tommy Thompson remains atop the GOP field, according to a poll released Wednesday by Marquette University Law School.

Despite facing a barrage of attacks from opponents attempting to paint him as a moderate, Thompson leads businessman Eric Hovde, 33 percent to 24 percent, among likely primary voters. Former Rep. Mark Neumann finished third with 21 percent, followed by state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald at 15 percent. Seven percent of respondents said they are undecided.

Thompson also fares best in the general election against Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin. The former governor leads the congresswoman 48 percent to 43 percent among likely voters. Baldwin runs even with Neumann (44-44), but leads Hovde (44-41) and Fitzgerald (45-40) by narrow margins.

Baldwin lags behind President Obama in the poll. Obama outpaces Mitt Romney, 50 percent to 45 percent, among likely general election voters. The presidential numbers mirror the results of another poll of Wisconsin voters released earlier Wednesday by Quinnipiac University. In that survey, Obama led Romney, 51 percent to 45 percent.
