2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo Bernie says taxes will go up on everyone if he becomes President....
I actually have no problem paying more money in taxes if it helps to create a better society.
But does Bernie have a formal proposal where he details these tax increases which will impact all Americans?
I find it a little hard to believe that you would say everyone's taxes are going up without putting out a formal proposal. That just leaves you open to attacks.
Does Bernie have a formal proposal?

(11,417 posts)My guess is we just trust Bernie to do the right thing.
We aren't supposed to ask these kinds of questions.

(62,444 posts)It's not as if the president has the power to set the tax rates in the first place.
I don't know why we run presidential elections on this notion of comparing some legislative program of one candidate to a legislative program of another candidate. The shit has to go through Congress, and nobody fucking bothers to vote in the mid-terms.
It's pathetic, to me at least, that people even get worked up about stuff presidents can't do in the first place.

(62,444 posts)No.
I think it's silly the way we treat the presidential election in isolation from attempting as a party to advance an agenda, the way that politics works in civilized countries.
I care about two things:
1. Who can launch nukes.
2. Who can appoint Supreme Court justices.
On those two considerations, I am voting for Sanders in the primary.
All the other stuff, to me, is fairly superficial and appeals to people who think we elect a royal ruler every four years, and probably couldn't name their own congressional representatives, let alone their state ones.
Candidate Obama had a tax plan too. Discussed and debated at length and with zero - zero - chance of ever becoming a reality. That's not his fault, but the fault of the generally stupid electorate who thinks the president can actually do these things.
I would not deign to tell you what you "should" do. I certainly will point out stuff I think is silly, such as believing that one candidate's "tax plan", out of the hundreds of people running for federal office next year, is worth a bucket of warm spit in relation to any other single candidate's tax plan.
The other perennially silly one, as long as I'm thinking of it is "gender pay equity". Clearly, Obama has been thinking "Oh, screw that" for seven years instead of picking up his gender pay equity wand and saying the magic words to make that happen. Why doesn't he get off his ass and do something about it?
Here's a golden oldie: "April 11, 1996, President Bill Clinton declares the first annual "National Pay Inequity Awareness Day"".
Bill Clinton also featured it in his 1999 SOTU speech.
Know what happened? Jack Shit
Presidential candidates run on shit they cannot do, by virtue of what the office and its limitations. It's all nice stuff but about as meaningful as W saying "We're going to Mars."

(11,417 posts)You say Bernie can win the general but if we ask questions that the voters will ask in the general you attack us.

(32,056 posts)I've personally seen that question asked many times by Hillary supporters today. I'd expect it from right-wingers who are always asking "how are you going to pay for that?", but I'm willing to answer whoever asks.
The answer is always the same - if you want a civilized society you raise taxes to pay for it. And you do not send all the proceeds to the Dept of Defense. We can solidify Social Security by raising the cap (and then I would say definite lock box - because otherwise repugs raid it at will to pay for war-mongering). We can raise taxes with taxes on trades - but we can only do with with a Bernie presidency because Hillary is not going to bite the hand that feeds her.
Who will be taxed? The people who have all the money. If you have any doubt about who that is I can drag out all the "It's the inequality, Stupid" charts to show you who has all the money (ie the top .01% of this country).

(2,602 posts)What I've read is that he is working on a formal plan to be released soon. Donald Trump speculates 90%. You can speculate whatever number you want. I'll happily pay a tax increase that works toward insuring the domestic tranquility.

(45,319 posts)The Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act, or FAMILY Act, is a proposal for paid family and medical leave from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).
Here is a FAQ for Democrats who apparently do not support the Democrats in Congress, so they can catch up. This is not part of Bernie's platform it is a current effort on the part of the Democratic caucus in the Congress.

(12,958 posts)We get nothing for what we pay now. I am not a Republican so I don't buy into the 'creeping fascism' trend.
Do you think it's cheaper to pay $800 per month insurance premiums or 30k per year tuition? It's basic math.
