compiled at Daily Kos:
The Week reports:
On Monday, Hillary Clinton met with the families of several African-American teenagers and children who died in shootings to discuss their experiences and her plans for "commonsense" gun control.
Clinton spent more than two hours in Chicago meeting with more than a dozen mothers who lost their children to gun violence, including the mothers of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old killed in 2012 in Florida by former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman; Jordan Davis, a 17-year-old killed in a 2014 shooting that started with a complaint about loud music; Michael Brown, the 18-year-old killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, in a shooting that sparked unrest in the town; and Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old shot and killed by police in Cleveland while carrying an airsoft gun.
The Huffington Post reports:
"She is a mother and she is a woman and I felt she understood where we were coming from," said Samaria Rice told CNN. "It doesn't matter what color we are, I felt that she really understand where we are coming from."
Also in attendance was the family of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl fatally shot by a gang member in Chicago just weeks after she performed at President Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration. First lady Michelle Obama attended her funeral.
Clinton has been vocally supportive of the Black Lives Matter movement for racial justice, which gained prominence following Martin's death.
We all have a responsibility to face these hard truths about race and justice honestly and directly, she said in a July speech.
Time reports:
According to the women, Clinton did not make any explicit promises to them, but did pledge to stay engaged in their causes and work on criminal justice reform. All of them women described the meeting as productive and said Clinton appeared earnest and trustworthy.
Fulton, Martin's mother, said the meeting with Clinton was "powerful" and "productive."
"It was a very powerful meeting, it was very powerful," she said.
"I think that it was very productive," Hamilton said after the gathering. "I think that all the work that the mothers are doing on behalf of our loved ones, it is working. People are asking to hear our stories. People are asking to find out what kind of legislation and policies we are changing."
She added: "We are hoping that her being a mother, being a grandmother that once she gets in office (she) can be effective to help all people, not just the black people, Hispanic people, everybody."
Clinton tweeted about the meeting afterward, saying that she was "grateful to spend time today with mothers who have lost a child to violence and turned their grief into a national call to action."
Clinton later pointed out the tragedy that occurred while the meeting was happening:
While in Chicago discussing the way forward, another child dies from gun violence just miles away. Devastating. https://t.co/3mXyMSTsxk -H

There is something profoundly wrong when African-American men are still far more likely to be stopped and searched by police, charged with crimes and sentenced to longer prison terms than are meted out to their white counterparts, Mrs. Clinton said in her first major policy speech in April.
"There is something wrong when a third of all black men face the prospect of prison during their lifetimes, Clinton said. We have allowed our criminal justice system to get out of balance and these recent tragedies should galvanize us to come together as a nation to find our balance again.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
What a disgusting comment on a serious issue that needs addressing. This is over the top, especially for the families involved who lost a loved one and volunteered to be in attendance. DU is better than this.

(51,698 posts)All I can figure is it is sour grapes because they know their candidate does not have the warmth and people skills to comfort a grieving mom like this. As one DUer noted, Sanders has the warmth of Richard Nixon. He just seems to have one speed: outrage. All he seems adept at doing is stabbing at the air with his finger while railing at oligarchs. Not all situations call for that.

NONE of these mothers expressed that they believed this visit to be 'opportunism.' Yet, you feel comfortable making that judgment while ridiculing this mother's expression of appreciation for the visit.
I gotta go with the moms. They've banded together for their cause and, no doubt, this visit enhances their advocacy. Presidential campaign politics is an opportunity for these candidates to show us where they stand. On Monday, Hillary stood with these families negatively impacted by police and gun violence.

(86,005 posts)...seeing that's where you begin and end your argument, I'd say you're criticism is actually the bull here.

See my previous statement. This was a political ploy made to make a political statement.

(41,991 posts)Opportunistic, not an actual show of support for women whose children died because of bad policy that she seeks to help change. Sexist because it addresses her understanding as a mother and grandmother of their grief. Dishonest because she didn't do some unfathomable thing rather than let hecklers take over (note she has met with people in the BLM movement and openly seeks to do so more).
This place gets really, really contemptible sometimes in its blanket attempts at trying to turn Hillary into a Bond villain.

(1,508 posts)that after having this meeting with these bereaved mothers Hillary Clinton, if she gets the nomination and then wins the presidency will do something to stop the violence, to clean up the police force, to stop her husband from investing in private prisons, and so many other things that need to be done in this country so that incidents like those that took the lives of the children of these mothers and others can be ended or at least prosecuted in this country.

And then there is this: http://www.naturalnews.com/046337_Hillary_Clinton_biotech_industry_presidential_campaign.html
Hillary Clinton is backed by many big media firms, if she wanted, she could do something now, she could ask those who are backing her to begin a campaign against bad policing. If she doesn't do something to try to curb the violence against black people in this country, she will have done something that in my mind would be unforgiveable. To meet with parents of children who have lost their lives due to gun violence and bad cops, and walk away without making at least a promise to make criminal justice reform a major part of her campaign says a lot. Even if she doesn't intend to do anything in the future, what would it hurt to give these poor mothers some hope. It leads me to believe she didn't make any promises because she really doesn't intend to do much if anything.

"Clinton has called for an end to private prisons and immigration detention centers that she said during a campaign event in Alabama have turned incarceration into a for-profit industry.

When she began her campaign for the presidency she made a lot of changes to what had been her families personal practices. As the articles I posted state, she agrees to stop accepting funding from companies that have funded her foundation since her family started it. Hillary has a way of trying to get on the right side of an issue when it benefits her, there is no doubt about that... Some call it finger in the wind politicians, you know, the kind that goes whichever way the wind blows until they are elected and then all bets are off. Also too, if you will read what her "fairer sentencing entails, it is talking about crack cocaine, something that everybody and his/her grandmother has known to be unfair for years. It is that bait and switch tactic...I'm going to fix the drug laws and make them more fair, I'm going to make sure powder cocaine and crack cocaine are dealt with on an equal basis, and not unfairly as it is today. Unfair drug laws deals with the fact that sentencing is partial, and racist. It is a well known fact that the population as a whole does drugs about the same amount equally, however you might notice that there are more Caucasians in this country, and by the way, they do drugs equal to or more than minorities, but if you look at the prison system you will notice an overwhelming presence of minorities for drug offenses and much less of the Caucasian population...are they just being overlooked? Or is law enforcement, the courts and the justice system as a whole biased? Hillary's platform doesn't go far enough IMHO.
I truly hope you are right about her. There is nothing I would like better than a President that will be for the middle class and the poor, and not so much for their peers as most politicians are today in this corporatist society we have right now, a society that is when it comes to black people beginning to look like a Police State.
