...as compared to Mark O'Malley and Hillary Clinton? As well as the members of the republican Clown Car.
I think this would demonstrate how much Bernie is much more like you and I.

(14,449 posts)330 thousand. No health care costs. I think he helped a little with college for his kids. But where is all his money? I make 115K a year and that has only been about 4 years before that was 75K for 10 years and goes down much from that. I have a way higher worth then he does not including homes. Something is missing.

(38,613 posts)"He's not wealthy enough" isn't going to be a winning opposition.

(2,188 posts)He makes $174,000 a year, and eats for free much of the time. If he's worth $330k he's an awful saver.

(23,156 posts)He does need a place to stay in DC, and I doubt he sleeps in his office, unlike some Republicans. There's travel to and from Vermont. And as others have pointed out, children to put through college, and grandchildren.
What he apparently hasn't done is written any books, or gone off on speaking tours, getting six figures per speech. Those are the sorts of things that make a politician lots of money.

That's how Bill Clinton made his money, that's how HRC made hers, and that is how Jimmy Carter continues to make his. Jimmy Carter has written a great many books.
The three of them also give speeches for money. Carter doesn't pull in as much as the Clintons, but I wouldn't turn down his "per speech" remuneration. In fact, if I got what he got for a speech, I could make do with one speech a year and live very well, indeed.

(45,850 posts)10. Bernie Sanders
Net worth: $110,014-$550,999
Bernie Sanders has an average estimated net worth of $330,507, well below other prospective presidential nominees and among the lowest compared with other members of Congress. The Vermont senator, who is the longest-serving independent in U.S. history, is a self-identified socialist. He is seeking the Democratic nomination, however, and is the most popular Democratic candidate after Hillary Clinton. In keeping with Sanders stated intention of starting a grass-roots movement, more than 90% of his campaign contributions have come from individual donors. Sanders campaign speeches have drawn record numbers of attendants. Most recently, 19,000 people watched Sanders speak at an NBA arena in Portland, Ore., the largest political event compared with all other candidates so far this election season.
4. Hillary Clinton
Net worth: $15.3 million-$55 million
In 2001, Hillary Clinton became the first female senator to represent New York State. After serving as secretary of State in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2013, Clinton announced her candidacy for president yet again this past April. Clinton is currently outspending and outpacing her closest competitor, Sen. Bernie Sanders, in fundraising. The Clinton campaign has raised more than $47.5 million, not including super PAC funding, and spent nearly $18.9 million significantly more than the $16.4 million and $4.8 million the Sanders campaign has raised and spent, respectively. However, while 69% of of Sanders campaign contributions have come from small individual donations, while only 17% of Clintons contributions have come from small individual donations.
Not including her husbands fortune, Hillary Clinton is worth an estimated $15.3 million, much of which she earned through investments, her book, and speaking fees since her time in the government. Over the past several years, Clinton and her husband have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on summer rentals in the Hamptons. Some of Clintons influential campaign donors have urged her not to rent another home in the Hamptons while campaigning for fear she could be dubbed an elitist.

(20,192 posts)relationship with Wall Street, he doesn't get stock tips from insiders (and if he did, he wouldn't take advantage of them). The fact that he hasn't become wealthy like most members of Congress just tells mev he has ethics.
