Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) called Republicans "political cowards" for their efforts to restrict voting rights and suggested a constitutional amendment might be necessary to protect the franchise.
"Maybe this is personal because I run for office. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win," Sanders said, when Rachel Maddow brought the topic up at Friday's MSNBC Democratic 2016 Forum."It has never occurred to me as a candidate to figure out a way to deny the vote to people because they might vote against me. People who do that are political cowards. They're afraid of a fair election."
He said the push for voting restrictions was a "a real crisis in this country" and said legislation or "maybe a constitutional amendment" was needed to guarentee that everyone 18 years of age is registered to vote.
"What Republican are doing is so un-American, so outrageous. It is literally beyond belief," Sanders said. "They're political cowards and if they can't face a free election, they should get another job."

(15,438 posts)Bernie is correct. Republicans are political cowards who don't want to own up to the fact that they've been fleecing their constituents while raking in the dough for their mega-donors.
What irks me is, Democratic leaders aren't holding these ALEC-loving shysters to account. Democrats need to go after them hard, just as hard as Republicans have been going after Democrats. They should all borrow from President Truman "philosophy":
"I never give the Republicans Hell. I just tell the truth on them and they think it's Hell."

(3,544 posts)I'm pretty sure he wants everyone eligible to vote at 18. It's automatic. He didn't have time to explain what rules would be in place to where you would not qualify to vote.

(39 posts)They are trying to shift the votes to their favor, and suppress it. I've been seeing that for years. This time, a giant turnout will signal on how tired they are of the same old crap and throw out the establishment on both ends of the spectrum.

(almost got thrown out!) "crimes against the republic."
It's much more than cowardice - it's downright evil and criminal.

Hell, they're not qualified to be anything more than weasels and grifters. Can't blame them for tryin' to hold on to the gravy train they've contrived for themselves.

Somehow this country has turned into a place where certain people have way too much money and want to control the little that they still can't.
This didn't happen overnight and it can't be solved quickly. First we need to give everyone access to real information, not media or even this site.
