And that's really why what happened tonight was so impressive. Despite facing long odds, and a news cycle that'd been dominated by terrorism heading into the debate an issue not very in-line with his core economic justice platform, and surely a spot of greater experience for Clinton Bernie Sanders walked away the winner of the second Democratic presidential debate, scoring some raw hits against Clinton's Wall Street coziness, and speaking authoritatively and expansively about ISIS, the Middle East,
The very nature of the debate ended up changing late in the game CBS ultimately decided to front-load questions about terrorism, in light of the attacks in Paris, France the night before, which left 129 people dead, including at least one American. This was easily foreseeable as a big advantage for Clinton given her years as Secretary of State, and given Sanders' heavy reliance on his domestic policy agenda, it theoretically gave her a chance to come out swinging early on an area of deep career experience.
But she might not have expected Sanders to perform quite as formidably as he did. Despite initially pivoting away from ISIS back to economics during his opening statement, Sanders capably attacked Clinton for her past vote to authorize the war in Iraq, which he characterized as the necessary precursor to ISIS' rise in the Middle East. He also set her on her heels on the topic of her huge amount of Wall Street contributions, as Business Insider detailed, suggesting that her explanations about her large amount of Wall Street campaign contributions are "not good enough," and arguing that it's no coincidence why the financial industry prefers her over him.
All in all, it was a red-letter night for Sanders. The only true test is whether it helps him out with early-primary states, and that'll be borne out by polls in the coming days and weeks. But on the strength of his overall performance, and the authoritativeness he showed even outside of his core area of economic justice, he definitely ought to get a little bump.

(17,301 posts)There really isn't a winner or loser. But good to hear Bernie answered questions truthfully and intelligently.

(62,325 posts)do not view 'terror' as important in their lives. One of the biggest issues in recent polls is getting the money out of politics.
I guess those in power are still hoping to use 9/11, 15 years later, AFTER we have seen the results of the supposed WOT, to bolster their ratings.
They are living in a huge bubble, ignoring the effects of Wall St corruption on ordinary people, still living in the glow of being able to manipulate the people using a terrible tragedy to do so. I guess they are puzzled when it falls flat and they are asked questions about their Wall St donors, which they answer with '9/11' .

(1,779 posts)The TV machine has certainly been hyping up this attack in Paris. Tom Hartman calls this kind of thing, "disaster porn." The media wants to explore all the fear and horror that people experience, this so we will also be fearful and horrified, and products will be sold.
I really did like Bernie on "Face the Nation" with John Dickerson this morning. He explained how global weather change brings about such events, pointing out that because of the lack of rain and other resources, people crowd into cities and are there with our jobs, without hope. At that point, they can succumb more readily to the radicalizing propaganda.
I don't know anyone who is bringing this important truth to the national stage besides Bernie. I don't believe that Hillary has mentioned the role of global weather change in world events.
It is ridiculous to believe that we should be able to prevent all terroristic attacks. Peter Ustinov once observed, "War is what large countries use to wage terrorism, and terrorism is what small countries use to wage war."
We should remind ourselves that 520,000 Americans die every year in this country, from smoking-related issues. Now that is real harm on a grand scale!

That was about it, but the pundit that called the debate did so with a caveat that the "winner is the one who rises in the polls post-debate", so if Sanders gains points next week he's correct. If not, they can go back to "reporting" on the top ten make-up secrets of the stars.
BTW... They did also feature this cover story on their home page, but what do they know?:

Voters Think Hillary Clinton Won The Second Democratic Debate With Her Commitment to National Security
Even though Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley hammered former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on her ties to Wall Street and big banks, voters still thought Clinton won the Democratic debate Saturday night, according to Public Policy Polling. Politico said O'Malley held his own in the debate for the first time, but, unfortunately, it might be too late for him to surpass Clinton or Sanders in the polls. Sanders gained more Twitter followers during the debate than Clinton and O'Malley combined, but voters still believed that Clinton was stronger on certain issues, according to CNBC.
