Bernie Sanders Keeps Strong Lead in TIME Person of the Year Poll

I find it very interesting that whenever there is actual people interacting with a poll, rather than some paid gate-keeper gathering up and interpreting data as they see fit, Bernie Sanders consistently tops out the rankings as being the winner/most favorable/etc.

With less than four days until TIME’s Person of the Year poll closes, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is holding on to a strong lead over some of 2015’s most influential people.

The Vermont Senator had 10.5% of the vote in the reader poll as of Thursday morning, well ahead of Malala Yousafzai, who is in second place at 5.2%. Trailing Sanders is Pope Francis, at 3.8%, TIME’s 2013 Person of the Year. Sanders is far ahead of other presidential candidates, including Republican Donald Trump (2%) and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton (1.3%).

While American political figures from John F. Kennedy to Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan have been recognized as Man of Year after winning the White House (the issue changed to Person of the Year in 1999), no presidential candidate has been named Person of the Year prior to the end of the campaign.

Due to the popularity of the readers’ choice poll, TIME has extended the deadline to Dec. 6 at 11:59 p.m.

1. Is the winner of the "Readers's Choice Online Poll" the default Person-of-the-Year?

Or do the Time Magazine editors and writers make the final choice of who gets put on the cover?

When it comes down to it, this is just another internet poll.

It's nice... It might be a headline for a day... But it's not a real poll and the people at Time pick the winner.

...since they require a login with Twitter or Facebook.

But it's not a scientific measure of likely Democratic primary voters.

it will be Trump, not Bernie, Not HRC, not Obama--etc. Even Hitler was Time "Man of the Year"--you don't have to be a good person to get this accolade. The reason I think it will be Trump is that the media and establishment have been dismissing him since he got into the race but he isn't going anywhere and (unfortunately) terrorist events may only help his stock with the segment of the electorate who support him.

If the criteria were greatest person in the world, Trump wouldn't fit.

Although, as stated in other threads about how very we he is doing with this poll, I voted for Malala, and really hope she wins

5. This poll has an embarrassing history

which is why it has no relationship to who the magazine picks.

The first winner was a professional wrestler.
More recently the winners have included Kim Jong Un.

The number of votes cast historically hasn't reflected the breadth of the winner's support -- just the dedication of their supporters in stuffing the "ballot box".
