Related: About this forumThat Clint Eastwood Chrysler ad was essentially a reelect Obama commercial...
Without overtly saying it.

(10,440 posts)I would run a clip of Romney saying "Let them fail" every single time that commercial ran. EVERY TIME.

(15,064 posts)conservative. I think Clint has become more progressive recently.

(15,318 posts)Eastwood was against the Iraq War, he has occasionally supported Democrats in the past, he's pretty liberal when it comes to social issues like gay rights and abortion and he was an environmental advocate back when he was mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

(9,523 posts)that I don't want to do the same. Especially since it highlights their hypocrisy/double standard about celebrity political opining so well.
But I have gathered that Eastwood is the kind of guy who's Republican loyalty would likely end with someone like McCain and not extend to a doofus like Romney, learning his lesson from a disaster like Bush.

(27,787 posts)All he did was promote the US auto industry. And talk about how important it was.
But it seemed there was an underlying message.

(5,105 posts)I thought it was simply a script on the reality of today's America, the fact that the economy's been screwed up and that GM is back and even though Detroit still lies in ruins there are improvements.
Realizing Eastwood has been a pub in the past, I think he was, at the time, thinking they were still the way they used to be: somewhat rational. Give him a break, he's getting older.

(13,933 posts)Factually, objectively, the auto industry bailout is a success story because of our administration. President Obama's likely opponent is on record saying let it die. The spot ought to be a strong argument to vote for Obama again.
But, the brilliance of the writing of the ad (IMO) is that people who oppose/lean against the President will interpret it the opposite way. It's "halftime in America" now and we've been punched and we're losing. What's it going to take to be "morning in America" again? A viewer's answer to that question (and I do think it was trying to evoke Reagen) is going to depend on how they want to answer it. Facts be damned (the first comment I read on a story about the ad was "Clint Eastwood for President." .

But Rove is a nasty bastard.

(146,346 posts)would think it favored them. For those who want the President re-elected, it was about that. For those who want to see Obama gone, it was about that. I found it terribly ineffective as an ad for anything. It was more of a pep talk for the concept of America.

(20,450 posts)Libertarian roots. He, unlike his Republican cohort charlatans--Bruce Williams, Kelsey Grammer, and Sly Stallone--is not over the top partisan or full of hate.
I really enjoyed the commercial and happy to see Clint finally wake up.

(5,066 posts)Look at his wiki page and you will discover he Is republican you can agree on some things with.
He has gaven money to a democrat In the past.He admitted when Unforgiven was up for oscars he voted for Perot.
He also went on record as being against the recall In California. He has never been Impressed with the Bushes. He wasn't wild
about Bush In 2000,and he wasn't a supporter of the Iraq war although he didn't want to attack Bush publicly.
The last time he actully publicly campagined for a republican was Nixon. While he admited he donated money and voted for Mccain
he called Obama his president too.Unlike Norris or Stallone he has never supported Birther movements. And has never been gungho
about Military action like Willis.
Look at some of his films. They aren't always beloved by right wingers. Some on far right didn't like Sudden Impact since he had
a rape victim hunt down her rapists. He also directed a film showing japanese point of view during world War II.He directed a film
with Morgan freeman as Nelson mandela as major character. His film on Hoover does show negative side of Hoover while some might
say it doesn't go far enough but considering he Is technical a republican It Is amazing.
If you are going to watch a Republican action star In past films you should watch Eastwood.
Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)I will always love his "Every Which Way But Loose" and all of those sequels.
I think Eastwood is also a supporter of marriage equality. He's much more of an old-style Libertarian Republican than the clan we got here.
How he voted for McCain is a mystery, but o.k. Given this commercial, I can't see how he could support Mitt Romney who opposed everything that the commercial stands for.

(35,703 posts)It was meant to be a message ... just about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it.
Eastwood reiterated that hes not supporting any politician at this time and added that if "Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it.

(11,531 posts)I didn't see a problem with it at all. Maybe he will go for Obama this time, I heard he is a moderate repub and doesn't like their social values and everyone running is either religious or against gays, so he just might want Obama again.
