Romney Stops Taking Questions
Mitt Romney answered his last question from a voter three weeks ago, the Washington Post reports.
"Out are 55-minute town hall meetings. In are 15-minute stump speeches at buffed-up rallies. There are rope lines and hot lights, giant flags and Secret Service agents with wires in their ears. The objective: appear presidential, avoid gaffes and convince Republicans that they have no reasonable option left but to rally around Romney's winning candidacy."
"He has pivoted from a retail campaign based on convincing people at his events that he has a command of the issues to a made-for-television spectacle where the people are simply props helping project an aura of momentum and inevitability to a national audience."

(22,871 posts)the republican candidates prove themselves too stupid to actaully answer questions off the cuff.

(15,318 posts)Nixon started holding carefully controlled town hall meetings where anyone who had a question was carefully screened long beforehand to make sure their question wasn't too difficult for him to answer.
A lot of Nixon's platform at the time consisted of vague promises and had very little substance, and he didn't want to have to take sharply defined stances on hot-button issues that would alienate voters.
These faux-town hall meetings worked very well in Nixon's favor. The public was shown Nixon speaking in front of calm, respectful audiences while the nation was being ripped apart by Vietnam protests and race riots. Meanwhile Humphrey was speaking in front of regular crowds and getting jeered and heckled by protesters up until late in the campaign. This contributed to the public viewing Nixon as the candidate who would bring stability and calm to the nation.
This was actually portrayed in the movie Nixon starring Anthony Hopkins, and they did a pretty good job with it.
It seems like ever since, the Republicans have chosen to carefully control their audiences, both to project an aura of stability and to avoid having their candidates have to answer any difficult questions.

(157 posts)I say Occupy protesters and others get REALLLLY creative in how to undermine his Madonna half time show of a campaign.

(15,318 posts)In fact, that's pretty much what Obama did. I remember his initial debate performances in early-to-mid 2007 as being pretty weak. But after a while he got much better at debating and ended up doing better than Hillary, and eventually, McCain.
