I know damn well that most Catholics AREN'T hard core right wing political activists but they are the ones who get all the ink during the elections. Remember when they were protesting Kerry taking communion because he was pro-choice - at the same time letting Schwartzeneggar off the hook, when he was also pro-choice?
These choreographed outrages about LOL "religious freedom" to deny women birth control pills etc., really needs to be countered by liberal Catholics this time.

(10,642 posts)How ironic.
I was in the process of a divorce and was becoming more socially and politically aware. I attended the March For Women's Lives with some friends and was profoundly moved by the experience. I left around that time. Quit taking my daughter, then 16, to church, also. She just turned 24. I have an ex and some other family members who are still furious at me for not raising her in the Church. I just didn't want to saddle her with that baggage and I think she is better for it.

Actually, me and the ex were pretty apolitical until he got into Limbaugh and all the other hate radio guys. That really turned me off and sort of sent me in the opposite direction. He "supported the troops." I argued that the best way to do that was to protest the war. He supported Bush, I was for John Kerry. Little things - he had a yellow ribbon on the truck, I had War is Not the Answer on the car. As we became more distant, I became closer with some liberal-minded women at the law firm I worked for. They turned me on to some Progressive web sites and, along with becoming more liberal on social issues, I realized I had serious issues with the Church on birth control. I was basically forbidden to go to the March for Womens' Lives but attended with friends anyway. Took my teenage daughter along, as well. That was pretty much the end of the marriage and the end of my relationship with the church. I'm sure he still attends Mass every Sunday and every holy day although he never paid me a dime in child support and did as little as possible to help me raise our child. Ironic indeed.

The horrors of war and poverty mean nothing to them.

I wish more of its members would take a hike. There are alternatives out there for believers and many of them are quite sane.
