2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLive at the Sanders rally in Amherst MA
Full crowd at the Fine Arts Center, with outside overflow crowd.
Overwhelmingly White. I see no non-Whites in the crowd, 2-3 on stage.
Primarily millenials and white hairs.
New slogan: "A FUTURE TO BELIEVE IN"

(7,413 posts)This early in the campaigns, most political rallies are overwhelmingly white.
Wait til Bernie becomes a household name and gets the media exposure he deserves - then see who is attending. Right now its just the political junkies and their cronies.

(30,439 posts)The OP is there right now.
Also, other rallies have confirmed the demographics of his supporters.
He has been unable to reach minorities in a meaningful way since he announced his run for president.

(3,649 posts)Let's also keep in mind this is in Amherst, which isn't exactly a token example of racial diversity.

(12,769 posts)We had lots of minorities marching for Bernie.

(8,090 posts)or even O'Malley, for that matter? I attended Dean rallies to learn more about him, to hear directly from him... why aren't minorities expected to do the same with Sanders, or any lesser known candidate?
Live and Learn
(12,769 posts)And I have no idea why they keep saying women and older people aren't for Bernie. That is certainly not true from what I have seen.

(8,090 posts)Get up off your ass and participate, regardless of skin color.
Sanders addresses voter suppression regularly... are certain folks just not tuning in? Just found this on his website:
http://www.sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/video-audio/voter-suppression
Economic justice and a $15 minimum wage would benefit POC greatly. Are some voters just not paying attention yet?
But, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, expecting an Amherst turnout to look like a DC rally is rather ridiculous. And the OP knows it.
Cali_Democrat
(30,439 posts)Polls consistently show that minorities prefer Hillary over Bernie. He's struggling in states like South Carolina with a heavy African American population.
SMC22307
(8,090 posts)Guess black Democratic South Carolinians are going with the name-brand.
Cali_Democrat
(30,439 posts)Polls consistently show him in the low single digits among all respondents.
SMC22307
(8,090 posts)Blinded by name-brand and glitz? Husband being the "first black president"? If the argument against Sanders is that he was an independent until recently, what about O'Malley? Democrat "since birth," Baltimore mayor, Maryland governor... doesn't get much more deep blue Democratic Party than that, eh?

Amherst, MA has a population that is 76% white and less than 5% black 6% hispanic.
I am sure you took the time to accurately assess the crowd that was there to share your unbiased opinion about it.

TM99
(8,352 posts)I always vote. I will vote Sanders. I won't vote Clinton. If she wins the primary, I won't post here voluntarily until after she loses, and we are stuck with Trump.
The nastiness, vindictiveness, and other choice words I wouldn't dare use for fear of a jury pile on has insured that I won't ever vote for Clinton even if she has a fucking D after her name.

(20,226 posts)People can only be true to themselves and follow their own conscience. But, I will not by default aid and abet the election of Donald Trump or Ted Cruz or any other crazy to be Commander and Chief of the most powerful military empire the world has ever known.

Douglas Carpenter
(20,226 posts)and caucuses and under the current rules that means that she should be the nominee. Of course in 1972 George did exactly that and they tried at the last minute to change the rules and cheat him out of the nomination. They failed but settled for just sabotaging his campaign which the Republicans and CREEP were only too grateful for and went on to do what the Democratic leadership had already started. Would they do the same to the Sanders campaign? I don't know - hopefully they are as scared of Trump and Cruz as we are. Besides, I wouldn't want to engage in such tactics.
Regardless who is to blame - if the devil himself was running against Ted Cruz or Donald Trump - I would support the devil himself. They are just too dangerous.

In fact, you should look at some of the pics you posted on Twitter. There are quite a few in the crowd directly behind Bernie.
