(41,977 posts)A case in point; I occasionally provide dialysis. I've dialyzed pregnant women. I've dialyzed women who for one reason or another had failed kidneys as a result of pregnancy. Without transplant, the average life of a dialysis patient is 5 years. (Although many people live longer, this is the average and people in the renal field are trying to change this)
I've cared for women who developed gestational diabetes who subsequently developed diabetes and all the health issues that entails, including blindness, loss of limbs, loss of life.
I've cared for women who ended up with prolonged hospital stays because of DIC--usually on a return basis from complications because I'm not an ICU or labor and delivery nurse.
I've cared for women who have stroked out because of pre- eclampsia.
Every pregnancy carries risk. Every single one. I loathe and despise those who want to pretend a women's body is their business, and that her pregnancy somehow belongs to everyone else but her.
