when people here insisted that its disgusting and women should breastfeed in restrooms if they had to feed their babies while out in public.

Just as the views on issues like rape culture and street harassment have improved here in recent years, this should not be mistaken for something about which we always had support from our democratic allies.

such as this would have that attitude and several other attitudes I've seen on here that aren't very pretty.

I wonder if it's a geographical thing. I've lived my adult life in either a big city or very liberal area and I'm astounded at how backwards a lot of people can be in their thinking.

though I have observed many of them seem to be from the Northwest. I think that is coincidence more than anything else. The key point is they have reinforcement for extremely reactionary ideas. It sometimes spreads beyond gender to race and homosexuality. Remember all the angst threads in response to a single thread about white privilege? Or the "am I homophobic if I'm not attracted to men" thread? They express what they can get away with, and since they have free reign expose their inner selves on issues of gender, they do so.

You completely missed the point being made. That people are equating breast feeding as being as frivolous an argument as one about the Olive Garden and whatever else that was that was mentioned.

We saw a lady sitting on a bench feeding her child and she told me how when she did that many years ago, she wrapped herself up so much to "hide" it she thought she looked like a cocoon because she used to get dirty looks. And most surprising was the fact that most of the "looks" came from women and not men! This was in the mid 80s.

I did kinda skip over the initial subject i guess because I thought it must have been a joke about the arguing here.

People on DU tend to be talking about issues that are a bit more serious. Of course, there are a LOT of different parts to DU and maybe I just havent hit the right ones. I just thought it was laughable that people were arguing about an Olive Garden
As I said in an earlier post that you must not have read, my comment was a reaction to reading the statement about that arguing. It had nothing to do with breast feeding and I never mentioned it. Its not unusual for threads to branch out onto other topics as they progress. And I've also noticed over the years that MANY getting riled up over the least little comment that they may not like. Sometimes its like I'm reading an 8th grade chatroom.

For the record, I have no issues with a woman breastfeeding her child. Its the best food for the child in my opinion, as long as the woman is able to do it.

Sad we keep slipping backwards, I know it's Texas but...???!!!? When I managed a store and was asked by the mother if she could breast feed, I always led her to the most comfortable chair. I know I live in a blue state, yet this boggles my mind.

And yes redqueen, I did miss the threads where people think this is wrong.

Thanks for your thread.

call breastfeeding obscene. I mean, wtf?

I don't think they actually mind babies getting fed. It's just that there's a woman who is doing something they don't approve of (using breasts -that are supposed to titillate them - for something that has nothing to do with them at all).

Love the gifs, by the way.

Instead of giving mothers grief over breastfeeding, the weaker-minded people (I'd say 'men', but I've seen women buy into this too, which is a shame) can be pro-active about their issues. They can look away.

But no, that wouldn't prop up the patriarchy, now would it.

But if you actually talk to women about their experiences you'll find that outside France and the Nordic countries (which are far better), there are still plenty of people who think women should go to a private room, who think their opinion about when to wean infants should matter to mothers, etc.
