I've been away for a while...

....and I am appalled and angered by the treatment of feminists and women in general here, as well as of any men who have the basic decency to support feminism.

What the hell, DU?! The Democratic Party's own goddamn platform is fully supportive of equal rights for women and minorities of all kinds. So why do I get the nagging feeling that Straight White Middle-Class Men are defining and dominating discussions here?

Which roughly translates to: "I don't give a fuck about other people's rights or freedoms."

It's all about stroking that fragile male ego, isn't it?

I've heard that one more than once when challenging folks on their lack of support (to put it kindly) regarding issues of equal rights for women and gays. I'm sure others here have heard that bullshit line, too.

... but, there are a significant few here that are bound and determined NOT to make it a "DU Platform" ... interestingly, many of those same folk aren't very invested in eliminating/ reducing the scourge of racism.

There has been been a real sea change here (for the last couple of years) ... I actually do believe Discussionist siphoned off some of the most egregious defenders of the "status quo" (read: defenders of racism and misogyny in all its forms)

From serving on MIRT I know that the admins will let PPRs stand and also rid new misogynists themselves when they are pointed out. I saw it happen on a number of occasions and I don't think it's breaking any rules to share that. I think they (the admin) are responsive and sensitive to our issues. Occasionally individual MIRT members will stand in the way but I think the jury system is the biggest problem. It is anonymous so folks feel comfortable to do as they like and we see the results of that every day.
