World's oldest woman to celebrate 117th birthday

A Japanese recognized as the world's oldest woman by Guinness World Records is celebrating a day before her 117th birthday on Thursday.

Misao Okawa was born on March 5th 1898. She lives in a nursing care facility for the elderly in Osaka.

On Wednesday, the mayor of the local municipality wished Okawa a happy birthday and gave her flowers.

She then posed for photographs with her family, including her 92-year-old son.

Okawa's caregivers say she's healthy and eats 3 meals a day. Her favorite foods are ramen noodles and beef stew.

For curious context...

She was twenty when when World War One ended. In her late forties when World War Two ended. In her fifties during Ike's administration. A senior citizen when Kennedy was assassinated. Seventy-seven when the Vietnam war ended. In her eighties during Reagan's terms. Ninety-six when the internet took off. One hundred and three when the World Trade Center was taken down.

I am in awe of the history she has lived through.

I can't help but think, wow, she's older than my grandfather was. And he died at age 102 several years ago. Unreal.
