Sun Apr 5, 2015, 09:23 AM
Apr 2015

We know their name for 'the world's oldest profession' for women is. Saw the support and suggestions on the thread, too.

The Lounge is not welcoming to all of us, even those of us who understand the humor of some.

Another thread was sentimental, but offended the politics of one poster, who attacked it in a particularly ugly fashion. The Lounge is just as much a minefield as GD.

The Lounge is not that friendly nor is it always non-political, so apparently the Lounge SOP is hard to enforce.

I don't find it a welcoming place and seldom post there. If I want a break from GD, I go to groups.

you will only have to go back a couple of pages.

There are several posts where he talks about buying his wife a car for her b'day and the hijinks that he is sure will ensue as she will show proper gratitude for his largesse.

also, please notice the people that participate in these threads and egg him on.

It takes more than one egg to bake a cake.

This is NOT his first performance art by any means. He has a history of being, shall we say, provocative ....

I remember all the stories he used to tell, from being lonely after a divorce, and impoverished sitting with his dogs in his cabin, to getting a high paying job and a fancy car, and a girl friend. Or something like that. Seemed to have a consumerist mindset. But his earlier tales may be why he is supported by some now. If it is the same person, that is? But I don't want to sign onto to DU2 to search it out. I don't know if we are crossing the line talking about him here, but in this group, such things are discussed. I think the economic aspect is the main thing, not the person espousing it.

I need to think about this. There is something here that is wrong, freshwest but, I can not put it into words.

something to do with, not going into the lounge for that reason.

I wonder how many Female DUers choose NOT to go into the lounge for THAT reason.

I am not sure what reason is it you are referring.

And Yes, I want this conversation to be about principles and not personalities and I understand that in the Lounge it is hard to separate the two but, that again brings me to question:

are not our principles a part of our personalities> and if not, why not. and if so, how/where do we separate the two?

Thank you for a thoughtful comment.

This is why the jury system is utterly useless. It's entirely subjective, and changes based on how people are feeling at the time. Here's the results (TA, I sent them to you but figured you wouldn't mind them being posted):
AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your Jury Service
On Fri Apr 3, 2015, 06:00 PM an alert was sent on the following post:

7 minutes to go
http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018745639

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

"get raped" with a smiley? How about a better choice of words?

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Apr 3, 2015, 06:10 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Horrible choice of expression to taint a nice and generous act. Hint, backwoodsbob, rape is never a joke and never, ever a substitute for loving sexual activity, even verbally.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Gah...I saw the original thread, and really don't want to hide this, but this is NOT appropriate for this site. Rape is not funny, not ever, no exceptions. It will never be a positive thing. To the alerter: you really should have just asked the poster to self delete.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Wow. Neanderthol.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Backwoods Bob could have used a better word, for sure, but I think it's pretty clear that he doesn't mean "literally" raped. Congratulations to Mrs. Backwoods on the new car.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: If the alerter thinks a better choice of words is appropriate, they should ask the poster, not knee jerk alert on it. Just ask them to edit their post. Sheesh.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

I was #2 btw, but #1 said what I really meant.

But what was said was entirely different. You know what he sounded like to me? The drunken frat boys that wander past around here on ocassion, laughing about the idea of getting raped by a woman--after all, who wouldn't want that? The 13 year old boys cussing out fags online, saying that they just raped the other team. The men from the MRA movement who use rape as just another verb to describe sex.

Language is critical. It reflects not just ourselves but the society around us. When we use rape interchangably with sex, it diminishes the horror of the act. It normalizes it. It makes it sound...almost acceptable. And even though we may conciously know the difference, it is that among many, many other things that adds up to create an oppressive culture.

Also, you may be okay with it, but let me tell you the number of times I saw my ex flinch when that word was used like this...
