Miss. Abortion Law Temporarily Blocked By Judge

A federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked enforcement of a Mississippi law that could shut down the only abortion clinic in the state. U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan in Jackson issued a temporary restraining order the day the new law took effect. He set a July 11 hearing to determine whether to block the law for a longer time.

The law requires anyone performing abortions at the state's only clinic to be an OB-GYN with privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. Such privileges can be difficult to obtain, and the clinic contends the mandate is designed to put it out of business. A clinic spokeswoman, Betty Thompson, has said the two physicians who do abortions there are OB-GYNs who travel from other states.

The clinic, Jackson Women's Health Organization, filed a lawsuit seeking to block it. The suit says the admitting privileges requirement is not medically necessary and is designed to put the clinic out of business.

If Jackson Women's Health Organization closes, Mississippi would be the only state without an abortion clinic.

This is so important. I've been worried about the outcome of this law. I'm not sure how much a temporary block can do but it's good news for the moment.

only until the 11th. it will be interesting to see if they can come up with anything to stop this.

5. My 1st nursing job back in late 70's in a hospital, med unit. Got a call late one night from ER

they were bringing in a woman who'd been raped and were looking for somewhere quieter than the ER to let her be and get examined. I offered one of my empty rooms. She came, hung out, paced, was examined, left. My supervisor was PISSED that I'd let then use this room because it would need to be totally sterilized because the woman probably was a prostitute or slut and had all sorts of STDs etc etc etc.

It took me quite aback, could not understand why my unit supervisor would have such a f'd up attitude about it. Yes, the room would need cleaning just like they did after we discharged someone with hepatitis or tb or a bleeding ulcer or any other such thing. WTF was it all about? Turns out she didn't think a woman could get raped unless she didn't try to get away, or wanted it, etc etc etc.

Not abortion related particularly, but this woman was so anti-women. Maybe it was combo of ignorance and fear? You are safe from rape unless you "really want it" or "don't fight"?

Sorry, didn't mean to side track, just remembering.

The GYN I worked with was a catholic who said they'd rather do first trimester abortions rather than having women do do-it-yourself ones. Much less trauma on the woman and the system.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

6. for about the last year, it has really felt to me like we are going to have to do a start over.

and that we are going to have to relearn why we had roe vs wade. at the determent to a lot of our girls.

the fun thing in this forum the last couple weeks, is we are seeing more of an upside with our youth speaking out on this stuff, then what we may have thought was out there. that is giving me, anyway, a little more hope that we will not have to take such a huge step back.

the perception of rape was so different back then. it was whispered. we had only started talking about it and challenging that it was not only the stranger behind the bushes.

but that woman, is part of the patriarchy. we are learning. it is not gender specific, but, with us all. all that we were raised with and have to unlearn.

Maybe it was combo of ignorance and fear?

i have heard that this is a lot of it, telling ourselves things so we feel safe. we do this in so many areas of our lives.
