Tippi Hedren Reveals “Evil, Deviant” Hitchcock’s On-Set Sexual Harassment

http://jezebel.com/5931848/tippi-hedren-reveals-evil-deviant-hitchcocks-on+set-sexual-harassment

Alfred Hitchcock has long been accused of putting his "cool blondes" through the ringer on movie sets; as a kid, I remember my mom telling me that Tippi Hedren had a real-life nervous breakdown onthe set of The Birds after she filmed the famous attack scene, during which actual birds were hurled at her face for hours. But, as it turns out, the traumatic on-set incidents were the symptom, not the cause.

HBO's upcoming movie The Girl divulges the full range of abuse that Hitchcock put Hedren through on the set of The Birds and Marnie, which escalated to full-on blackmail: when she refused his sexualadvances on-set, he guaranteed that she would never work again by holding her to a contract with him. Because of the studio system of the time, contract players were bound to their directors, and it effectively ruined her career. Hedren, now 82, spoke at a panel discussion for The Girl, starring Sienna Miller and Toby Jones and based on a book about Hitchcock and herself entitled Spellbound by Beauty.

...

She added that if this occurred in today's Hollywood, she would be "a very rich woman," and Sienna Miller confirmed that shit would never fly between an actress and a director now. (Mind you, just a few days ago, Russell Brand harassed a wardrobe girl to show him her tits. Yes, different situation, but still, worth noting in this context).

...

----------------------------------

I wonder how many more stories there are like this, yet to be told or never to be told.

Workplace sexual harassment (which thanks to Catharine MacKinnon is illegal), street harassment, online harassment... it's 2012. And still with this crap. Come on.

The idea that ' if a hot / rich / popular guy does it, women and girls like it' is one borne out of patriarchal thinking and most popular on MRA sites.

and fewer attackers get away with these crimes.

Our society sets women up to be victimized, and then the misogynist people support it by mocking and insulting anyone who dares to draw attention to the widespread victimization.

Obviously many people are quite happy with the status quo.

A few weeks back there was a thread giving applause to Kirk Douglas for recent statements.

You know - the man is a dirt bag. What he did I'm sure to Natalie and to many others . . . I think a LOT of that goes on in the Movie Industry. A lot. I don't think the Casting Couch is a benign inconsequential thing. For women - or for men - who are victimized by it.

It's been out there (sorry - I'm an old movie buff ) for some time that he raped Natalie Woods when she was a teenager. Add two and two together- and a lot of her behavior makes sense.

Today, he's still alive and barely holding on. But those who know the truth are still hoping and praying he will rot in hell for eternity. That all his good deeds and donations will never mask the truth…

So when the time comes, and the now 95-year -ld Kirk Douglas, the superstar actor, finally dies, there will be tributes and honors about him. Just remember that he is a monster who never repented, apologized, nor showed any sorrow for destroying the lives of others. Especially the life of that young beloved actress named Natalie Wood.

Hell, most people just avoid feminism entirely!

Too depressing, outrage-inducing... it's a sadly common response.
