Hi y'all. I'm a gay by-god West Virginian living in San Francisco. I've only made 10 posts so far, but apparently I've already convinced several people that I'm some sort of right-wing, gun loving infiltrator. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm looking for lively respectful discussion, education and intellectual integrity. Turns-offs include classism, groupthink, echo chambers, poor reading comprehension and bad grammar. "Sanddog" comes from Dune and "42" from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I miss ice cream and steak because I recently chose to become vegan.

(68,644 posts)Don't pay any attention to our vocal minority who call people names just because they don't tow the strict line.
Most of us aren't like that.

(149,737 posts)I'm glad you're here.
I hope you'll persevere and hang in there. It gets easier.
Being vegan is a tough row to hoe! I hope it will work out for you. I could not ever do that!

(68,644 posts)I just stumbled on the exchange you were having with other members.
That particular group is a place where you might be challenged just for doing nothing, so be warned.
There's is a protected group and they'll block you from it if they are suspicious.
Better to not engage them, in my opinion.
Have a great weekend!

Yes, I beginning to understand that they interpret a "safe haven" as place they can be free from even the slightest critique, even if it's on a subject tangential to the stated purpose of the group. I went to a fundamentalist church like that once.

(9,290 posts)Alot of posters are going to be suspicious of you. Sometimes its warranted and sometimes its not. But the admins and MIRT both do a good job at finding the real right wing troublemakers so unless you really are an infiltrator I would not worry
I don't think I could ever cut it as a vegan (love my milk!) but I have at times considered becoming a semi-vegetarian.
The way I see it, we are perfectly capable of living without taking the life of a conscious thinking animal but choose not to mainly because we like the taste of meat. There is something about that which bothers me. But I live with, and I am the main cook for, a family of meat eaters who I know for a fact they would do not share my sentiments. I also have no intention of trying to force my moral quandaries on them.
So by my thinking, if I were to try and do it by myself it seems to me that all that would do is lead to wasted food. The animal is already dead and by not eating it, that would mean it just died in vain for no reason. But this is probably me just trying to justify my lack of willpower >.<
If I ever did try to go vegetarian it would probably be one of those Ideas that I would try for a week and then succumb to temptation.

(117 posts)I don't have any ethical qualms about eating meat or animal products (like eggs, cheese and honey) per se. I've chosen to go vegan simply only because I don't want my actions to contribute to the demand for factory farming products. It's more of a boycott, really. That said, I'll occasionally eat what I call "karma-neutral" non-vegan food. For instance, an egg from a friend's back yard chicken (which seems to taste much better when you haven't had any in months).
