There have been very rare (2?) amnesty periods over the past 13 years when admins allowed DUers to change their username without penalty--usually to allow those with outdated usernames referencing previous administration, politicos, or events to do so. I think the last was in 2004 or there 'abouts' and seem to recall admins stating they had no plans to do so again.

You can register a new name and start over, but have to stop using the old username account.
