A draft to start a discussion on this group's SOP.

This is a group for discussing information, news & current events related to psychology, psychiatry and the intersection of Mental Health with civil rights, justice, and policy.

Controversial topics and varying opinion are welcome. However, the use of colloquial disparaging language (such as variations on crazy, loony, nut, psycho etc, ) is specifically discouraged except when it is central to a discussion or a direct quote.

This is not a support group. Opinions expressed herein should not be construed to be legal or medical advise. Persons seeking a supportive setting to discuss their experience with mental illness are directed to the Mental Health Support Group.

Persons experiencing an emotional crisis are directed to call their doctor, go to the nearest emergency room, or call 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) to be directed to a professional counselor nearby.

We can keep it kicked up near the top until that happens.

Interested DUers wanting to serve as hosts need to contact the Admin. Since discussion began about a new group several people have expressed interest in that.

My expectation is that in a short time the new host(s) will do what must be done to get a final draft of an SOP pinned to the top of the board.

At present, interested supporters of the new group can contribute to feeling out issues about the groups purpose and whatever 'safe haven' issues it desires to put in place.

My post is offered as starting place...the final SOP should reflect the group's wished, and it may or may not look like what I posted above.

You may wish to consider calling out the DSM in the charter based on its influence as *the* diagnostic guide.

Amending DSM-4 to stop treating gayness as a mental illness made a big impact on the gay rights movement, for example.

I also like the idea of discussing mental health professional education and scholarship.

I'm not really aware of everything coming in the new DSM, so I can't comment on if or how it treats gender or orientation.

Sounds good to me and I can't really think of anything I'd like to add.
