(NJ) Gun bill proposed by Rep. Bill Pascrell would raise taxes on weapons, ammunition

(snip)

Rep. Bill Pascrell announced the Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act. The bill would provide $600 million to law enforcement each year by increasing taxes associated with purchasing firearms and ammunition.

The goal is to help keep New Jersey safe and provide a means for law enforcement to do their jobs, according to Pascrell.

Pascrell says the legislation is a long time coming. "The tax on handguns was last increased in 1955," he says. "Worse yet, the tax rate on ammunition and other types of firearms has remained the same since 1941."

The proposal increases excise taxes on guns from between 10 and 11 percent up to a 20 percent tax. The tax on ammunition would jump 50 percent.

But, lets not for get the Free Speech Tax, Assembly Tax, Petition Tax, Religion Tax, and the tax on the other rights in the Bill of Rights.

Isn't the idea of not taxing churches is it is a guaranteed right?

Oh, I almost forgot the tax to vote.

I see the money filling the government coffers already. Hey, we may have just eliminated the deficit!

Don't be absurd. Do we not tax purchases of newspaper and ink? Shoes and cameras?

I believe Gunhuggin' Holler is down the road a spell.

But not a "sin" tax like we do on beer or cigarettes. I have no problem with the normal sales tax but a 20% tax just because some people will feel better, no.

If the local news paper was $1.00 (including sales tax) plus $0.50 press tax then you may have a point.
