Nearly a Third of Americans Believe Armed Revolution Against Government May Be Necessary: Return of the KKK

Farleigh Dickinson University conducted a poll released on May 1 that implies that much of the pro-gun sentiment has nothing to do with self-defense, but rather with anti-federal government rage:

Overall, the poll finds that 29 percent of Americans think that an armed revolution in order to protect liberties might be necessary in the next few years, with another five percent unsure. However, these beliefs are conditional on party. Just 18 percent of Democrats think an armed revolution may be necessary, as opposed to 44 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of independents….

“The differences in views of gun legislation are really a function of differences in what people believe guns are for,” said Dan Cassino, (a professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson.) “If you truly believe an armed revolution is possible in the near future, you need weapons and you’re going to be wary about government efforts to take them away."

But let's be clear that the willingness to take up firearms allegedly "to protect liberties" is occurring after a long right wing-fomented Tea Party siege against a black president. Furthermore, it is – as BuzzFlash at Truthout has often noted – a rebellion of whites who can't separate the image of America as a Caucasian-ruled nation from the legal basis of a democracy as enshrined in the US Constitution. Theirs is a racist fantasy that a democracy should look like the skin color of the "founding fathers," not about the legal framework of the nation that they created.

2. Good point. What gets me is that the gun fanciers know that, yet they still promote guns.

I firmly believe the majority of people seriously into guns -- I'm not talking about the guy who has a gun or two in his home for hunting, self-defense, etc. -- are bigots. Their gun love is fueled by their fear of minorities and, in some cases, desire for white supremacy.

By trying to coddle all gun fanciers, we have to settle for the Zimmermans, Dunns, Randy Weavers, Bundy Ranch Militia, Loughners, wounded children, etc. And the gun fanciers are fine with that as long as they have access to more and more guns in more places.

3. You are exactly correct, but

you are much too kind by your characterization of gun fetishists as "gun fanciers." Those self-proclaimed "Democrats" who support and apologize for the NRA by using inane analogies like, "even a broken clock is right twice a day," are being willfully obtuse. The NRA is never, ever, "right" except for its politics.

The NRA and those who support the right-wing gun lobby by their steadfast refusal to even consider steps to curtail the obscene proliferation of guns in this country, all have the blood of innocents on their hands. No amount of insincere apologies can wipe away that stain, or make up for the loss of life due to the irresponsible behavior of many gun owners. Their protestations of "but we are law abiding," ring hollow when lax laws allow children access to unsecured guns, or easy gun theft by criminals.

The other shallow excuse by some "progressive" gun promoters is that "I teach gun safety, thereby doing my part to save lives." Bullshit! By their very design and purpose, guns are inherently not safe, nor were they meant to be. Guns serve but one design purpose: to kill living things. The only thing that makes a gun even close to "safe" is locking it up in a secure place like an armory and tracking its custody 24/7.

Gun "fanciers" = right-wing gun culture enablers.
