Moms Demand Action hits home

There was Virginia Tech, then NIU where my daughter now studies, and when the Sandy Hook Massacre happened in 2012, I said ‘Enough is enough!’ It’s time to do something about this.”

This was the answer Annie Craig of Aurora gave when I asked her why she had gone to Indianapolis recently to attend a gathering of the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Why Indianapolis? Because that’s where the National Rifle Association was holding its annual meeting.

“We wanted to go calmly, quietly, and unarmed to protest their leadership and the extremism they are promoting,” said Craig.

1. Right-wing gun lobby hatred exposed

From the link in the OP:

No one is asking law-abiding gun owners to give up their guns or hunters to stop hunting. In the words of Moms Demand founder Shannon Watts: “Our issue is not really with the members of the NRA, 74 percent of whom believe there should be background checks on every gun purchase. We’re not anti-gun. We support the Second Amendment. Many of our moms are gun owners.” They simply want a return to common sense.

Craig told me how the NRA ignored them at first, but is now responding with anger, including snarky comments on social media, ridicule at how “small” Moms Demand Action is and outright lies about them. Watts recently had to take down her Facebook page due to all the hate and harassment directed both at her and her family. But Moms Demand Action is not going away.

We can see this same vitriolic reaction here on DU about any organization which is attempting to restore sanity to the gun laws in this nation. The right-wing gun lobby is well represented by a very vocal minority of Second Amendment absolutists and NRA apologists. The main ingredients of their special brand of venom are juvenile ridicule, twisted NRA "statistics," false equivalence, and outright displays of hatred for anyone who disagrees with their obscene obsession with all things guns.

Please support Moms Demand Action, and other gun control organizations in any way that you can. If their efforts can elicit such violent and hateful reactions from the right-wing gun lobby and its supporters, they must be doing something right in their fight against the gun violence epidemic in this country.
