Celebrities to Elizabeth Warren: Please Run For President

What would you do if you got a letter from 90-some well-known artists–actors, directors, musicians, and other members of the creative community–asking you to run for president? That’s a question you can ask Senator Elizabeth Warren; she just received an open letter from the members of “Artists for Warren,” a growing group of artists and creatives urging the senator to run for president in 2016.

These artists are certainly not the first to make this ask of Elizabeth Warren. Hundreds of thousands of people from across the country have also joined the RunWarrenRun movement, passionately urging Elizabeth Warren to run for president.

The open letter from the artists reads: “We need someone who can inspire a nation to work together each day to make our country the best possible place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Elizabeth Warren is that person–and this is a moment made for her. These artists are ready to put their talents, followings, and support behind an Elizabeth Warren presidential run, and they’re joining the Run Warren Run effort to show her that.

Seriously, this action by these celebs is encouraging. And takes guts, too - because we all know about HRC's enemies list. Can Bill get them black-balled from Davos?

9. I think George McGovern had something like that in 1972.

Not necessarily asking him to run. But strong support from Hollywood celebrities who were pretty vocal. It can be a double-edged sword. Warren Beatty, Barbara Streisand, Shirley McClaine. Folks like that. If you watch the documentary on McGovern, mistakes were made by aligning too much with celebrities like Jane Fonda who were despised by much of middle america at the time. Enough so that they came out to vote just to vote against the people who supported McGovern. Of course, we know McGovern lost 48 states, in an absolute route by Nixon. I'm not saying this to denigrate McGovern in the least. Or to disparage Warren from running. I too would like to see her run!

This led to more of a distancing from traditionally Hollywood celebrity endorsements being hugely publicized. As an example, I think Barack Obama and his staff did an excellent job of not aligning themselves or their candidate too closely with lightning rods like Michael Moore or Susan Sarandon. Let's face it, as good as some of those folks may be, Hollywood type actors can have a tendency to crowd the spotlight too much if you let them. The spotlight should be on the issues that matter to most people. Specifically, what policies do you promote that will directly assist the large number of people who are hurting. What direct steps will you take? You certainly don't want to be subjected to claims of hypocrisy when you're only high profile endorsements are from very rich Hollywood actors (no matter how much good they do and how well-intentioned they are). Get some non one percenters behind you. Highlight them. People in music. People in science. People in physics. Writers. Activists. Teachers.

That's why I'm posting this: if anyone from moveon is reading this, please include more artists from fields other than just acting. Include the arts and sciences. Include more people of color. Don't just box yourself into this corner of you and your best friends. Branch out. Get other people with more weight behind this campaign. And not just people who are demonized by the right.

TL, DR: I hope moveon builds on this by including a more diverse group of Elizabeth Warren supporters.

Celebrities are no more important than anyone else. A celebrity has no more value or worth than a teacher, a nurse, a factory worker, a janitor, or an out of work mom trying to make life better for her kids. Hopefully, the good Senator is just as flattered and moved by the thousands and thousands of everyday, working class Americans who want her to run.

18. I have to say, she is/will be much more effective as a Senator.

Right now she is in the Senate, and in a responsible position.
She can name names and tell truth, and she can focus on financial issues.

As President, one has to be much more diplomatic, and weigh each comment and decision.
And run a huge expensive race to get elected and re-elected.

Right now Elizabeth Warren has much more room to maneuver
