When I went to graduate school in 1969 at UCLA my nsf fellowship was initially only $200 per month. Not a lot. So my wife and I would go to the Friday midnight showings of Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies, admission five cents. I guess they made money from popcorn. But we snuck in our own snacks. UCLA soon kicked in money for research and teaching, $10,000 per year tax free, pretty grand back then, so we could go to your movie theater too. Thank you for the warm memories.
