How do you know if you have Type II?

I'm 51, put on about 40 lbs in the last 4 years. I lost my mom and sister within 2 months in 2010. I became depressed and over ate and drank (who wouldn't). I'm also in menopause, had my last period over a year ago. I take Cymbalta for my depression and fibromyalgia. I've read that this med can cause weight gain too. It just bugs me that doctors, therapists, everyday people wonder if I have diabetes or they worry I will get it just because I've gained weight. Do I have to look like a runway model to be considered healthy? Jesus! My blood work is always ok. Blood sugar is normal. I walk a brisk hour a day easily, not a big eater. I've always been a low energy, sensitive introverted person, but I think the menopause is what's doing it...

I guess I'll know when I get my latest bloodwork back. Had fasting tests done - - blood sugar, thyroid, cholesterol

thanks for reading!

I hope the blood work shows you a path forward, no matter what that path is. Being tired and gaining weight is never fun - no matter what the cause is.

diabetes. I will warn you, though, that if your fasting sugar is right around 100, 101, you may have prediabetes.

I was fine, doing just what you are doing -- the walking, eating well, but I was also about 25-30 lbs. overweight. When I turned 60, I was diagnosed with diabetes. The year before, my fasting blood sugar had been 100. I read recently that studies show that people who have a series of fasting blood sugars around 100 are more likely to actually develop diabetes. I guess my BG has been creeping up for years, from very normal to almost diabetic, to diabetic. Sigh. Exercise obviously didn't help me. It does look like everyone has a different threshold; some will develop it with slight overweight, others have to put on lots of pounds to get it, and then there are those who have genetic components and weight means nothing.
