Hyde Park Declaration of "Third Way" centrism?
Is this a real document that existed or is this urban legend?
This page at "On The Issues" talks about a document from 2000 called Hyde Park Declaration. It cites a source it calls a manifesto, "A New Politics for a New America": Report: the manifesto, "A New Politics for a New America":
Source: The Hyde Park Declaration http://www.ontheissues.org/Notebook/Note_00-DLC0.htm It gives this link to the source but nothing is there: http://www.ndol.org/ndol_ci.cfm?kaid=128&subid=174&contentid=1926 But searching turns up an old thread on DU!: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x1098709 So apparently when those DUers were looking at it on Sun Feb-08-04 they were looking at a functioning link. It's also mentioned in the book Servants of Wealth: The Right's Assault on Economic Justice. As seen on Google Books: https://books.google.com/books?id=YtUpBtSxe2gC&pg=PA191&dq=%22A+New+Politics+for+a+New+America%22&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CB4Q6AEwAGoVChMIkZ-Cz8PxxgIVwaqACh316g-E#v=onepage&q=%22A%20New%20Politics%20for%20a%20New%20America%22&f=false EDIT to add: apparently ndol was "New Democrats On Line" ? I'm just trying to see if it's real.

1. Wow. That was some thread. I googled. The Hyde Park Declaration of 1941 came up first.
Something about having arms for the war made in Canada.
Why would they use that name for the 2000 Declaration of New Democrat policies? Then I saw some links to FREEP, where they must have been discussing it. I didn't bother with those. I've looked for a lot of things in connection with researching Hillary that are no longer online. ![]() The replies on that thread are a hoot. Where are those posters now? |

2. I think this was a real document published by DLC
It was also discussed on daily kos as recently as 2014 using the link:
http://www.dlc.org/ndol_cid261.html?kaid=86&subid=194&contentid=1926 Many of the most prominent Dems are very quiet about their association with this orgnaization.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/01/10/1268583/-Where-have-the-Blue-Dogs-gone
As the Hyde Park Declaration demonstrates, this is a very conservative and business-friendly crowd. Here's the link: DLC | Key Document | August 1, 2000 The Hyde Park Declaration: A Statement of Principles and a Policy Agenda for the 21st Century Basically, this document provides a broad framework for the Bowles-Simpson Fiscal Commission Chairman's Mark, "The Moment Of Truth." I guess DLC is gone now but I hope somebody is be preserving their manifestos. |

However, it's philosophy lives on and is being spread by numerous offshoot think tanks, numerous New Democrat politicians at the federal,* state and local levels and by their supporters. http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1277&pid=8274 ETA: *Including the Congressional New Democrat Coalition. |

4. That's really interesting.
Thanks for the solid info.
I haven't seen much anything first hand from these groups. I've just searched the Clinton Library website for "Democratic Leadership Council". Not much search results. Found some cool old videos on C-SPAN though. Maybe I can listen to these to help me fall asleep or something. http://www.c-span.org/video/?6602-1/towards-new-democratic-agenda http://www.c-span.org/search/?sdate=&edate=&searchtype=Videos&sort=Least+Recent+Event&text=0&all%5B%5D=%2522democratic%2Bleadership%2Bcouncil%2522&all%5B%5D=%2522annual%2Bmeeting%2522 |

5. I read some at the DLC website before they took it down.
Among the things From presented for President Elect Obama's consideration: Infrastructure loans, sunset commission to determine when programs were no longer needed *cough* "entitlements," *cough.*
The most shocking thing (to me) I saw was an article by Harold Ford pushing for re-building infrastructure that casually and without explanation or comment lumped nuclear plants in with bridges and roads as infrastructure. |
