The U.S. is a system of “Economic Elite Domination” and former president Jimmy Carter blames the broken campaign finance system, which has caused the country to no longer function like a democracy. At least he speaks the truth!

Former President Jimmy Carter believes the United States’ campaign finance system is so broken that the country is no longer a functional democracy.

Appearing on the Thom Hartmann show this week, Carter said that “unlimited political bribery” is “the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.”

He said the same problems are present in elections for “U.S. senators and congress members.”

So glad, though, that he's out there trying to raise awareness, in any way. Maybe in the future, it will make a difference. I sadly think who ever ends up as our president in 2017 will just be the Best President Moneyed Interests can buy.

Will keep pulling for Bernie & hoping for a big upset in the primaries until then!!!

3. With all respect to Carter, it could not be more obvious that we are an

oligarchy and always have been, though I agree with Citicorp that the more accurate term now is plutonomy. (We don't even make it to plutocracy.)

4. I think the point here is that a former president of the US is saying this.

We all know it's obvious, here. That doesn't mean the general population acknowledges it. To me, its very good that he's at least trying to bring more attention to it. The only way it can change is if a great mass of our population rise up & demand Democracy & true representation. Heads in the sand ain't gonna do it.

Without two cups of coffee in the morning, I am useless and I've yet to have my first today.

Thank you for that. I do have a soft spot for Carter. I don't think he is a perfect person or was a perfect President, but no one is. I do I think he tries his very best to do what he believes is right, and that is all one can ask of any human. And, his trying is not of the "Fail, but he meant well," variety, either. His accomplishments are awesome.

His words made Rolling Stone, too. Its a good thing. And yes, he's a good man. We need many more high profile people out there talking about this.

The average person on the street would think you were crazy if you told them the US is not a democracy anymore. How could we not be if we vote, after all? Yes, we could use more Jimmy Carters...

7. I don't know, river lover.

Massive numbers of Americans who are eligible to vote do not bother to do so. Of course, one can read into that almost anything one wants to read into that. However, if they thought voting would improve their lives and the lives of their families and neighbors, I'd like to think that more of them would show up at the polls on election days. I could be misreading it, though.
