Marijuana legalization hurting Mexican drug cartels

https://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/05/18/1300289/-Marijuana-legalization-hurting-Mexican-drug-cartels

Farmers in the storied “Golden Triangle” region of Mexico’s Sinaloa state, which has produced the country’s most notorious gangsters and biggest marijuana harvests, say they are no longer planting the crop. Its wholesale price has collapsed in the past five years, from $100 per kilogram to less than $25.

“It’s not worth it anymore,” said Rodrigo Silla, 50, a lifelong cannabis farmer who said he couldn’t remember the last time his family and others in their tiny hamlet gave up growing mota. “I wish the Americans would stop with this legalization.”

Several of Mexico's states can be considered failed states because the drug cartels are out of control. The country of Mexico is in the warning status. One hitman for the cartels said he killed 800 people before he stopped keeping track.

Denying those drug cartels cash would certainly be a step in the right direction.

I've been saying this for years. I've long believed the cartels have friends inside Washington, and that's why it is still illegal at the federal level. If the US decriminalized drugs, a lot of things would come crashing down outside our borders.

This edit will probably get me hidden, but I just want through this out here, but violence stemming from drug wars is a lot of reasons why people immigrate here.

We need to move along and tell the CIA to get their money some other way.

has fueled plenty of violence outside our borders. I feel for the Mexican farmer and even the California growers who took the risks to provide cannabis. We took that risk ourselves for several years. We never got rich, but we grew our own smoke and kept our friends happy. But it's time to face reality.
America must decriminalize all drugs and provide treatment centers. Then, maybe, if we can just stay out of their way, our southern neighbors might have half a chance for decent, peaceful, cartel free lives.
