'Jeff Merkley Becomes First Senator to Endorse Bernie Sanders For President', April 16, 2016, TPM/Talking Points Memo.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) presidential bid in a New York Times op-ed published Wednesday morning, becoming the first sitting U.S. senator to back Sanders.
"After considering the biggest challenges facing our nation and the future I want for my children and our country, I have decided to become the first member of the Senate to support my colleague Bernie Sanders for president," Merkley wrote in the op-ed. The Oregon senator said that the "economy, both by accident and design, has become rigged to make a fortunate few very well off while leaving most Americans struggling to keep up." He praised Hillary Clinton, but said that Sanders is "boldly and fiercely addressing the biggest challenges facing our country."
"It has been noted that Bernie has an uphill battle ahead of him to win the Democratic nomination. But his leadership on these issues and his willingness to fearlessly stand up to the powers that be have galvanized a grass-roots movement," he wrote. "People know that we dont just need better policies, we need a wholesale rethinking of how our economy and our politics work, and for whom they work."

Be interesting to see what happens going forward.

(41,145 posts)and events ALL OVER the US with 15, 20, and 30,000 people! from coast to coast. Where have you been? Cruz can barely recruit enough attendees to fill a HS gym.
Also, Bernie has a large, wide and growing list of endorsers from many fields: public officials, US Congressmen like Tulsi Gabbard, Keith Ellison, Raul Grijvala, State Legislators, State Democratic Party Chairpersons, economists, intellectuals, media people, activists and artists.
Establishment Democrats are reluctant to depart from the mainstream. There's no comparison or relationship with Ted Cruz whatsoever. You should be more careful before launching a silly, uninformed post like that here. But then, that's your detail. Have a great day.

(3,017 posts)I think he/she is trying to compare Merkley to Cruz because Merkley didn't fall in line with Team Hillary.
Clearly a troll who should be banned from this board.

(45,251 posts)Please thank U.S. Senator Merkeley (D- Oregon) for being the first U.S. Senator to endorse his fellow U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
As we know from Democratic politicians who have spoken out, this requires bravery and leadership (as well as discernment).
