Sen. Bernie Sanders capped a day in New York City on Friday with an appearance on The Tonight Show with Stephen Colbert after a busy day that included a hybrid rally and fundraiser after a round of news media interviews.
Speaking on CBS, Sanders was asked about Donald Trumps refusal to correct a man at a town hall meeting who called President Barack Obama a non-American Muslim. I think its a disgrace to again question whether or not the president of the United States was born in this country or whether hes a Christian, Sanders told CBS News.
During the noon hour, Sanders drew nearly 1.200 supporters to Manhattans Town Hall. It was only the seventh time Sanders had held anything like a traditional fundraiser, but it really wasnt anything like a traditional fundraiser. Instead of a small clutch of rich donors, Sanders backers jammed into the concert hall and roared approval when he railed about Citizens United, the Supreme Court ruling that corrupted the American political system. He bashed Wall Street, a top source of money for most politicians, according to The New York Times. He bashed the Republican debate on Wednesday, asking how the candidates could get through three hours with not one word to say about the corrupt campaign finance system we are living in today. And he bragged about not having a super PAC he is the only major candidate who does not earning one of his biggest cheers of the hour.
On The Tonight Show, late-night comic Stephen Colbert questioned Sanders refusal to take money from super PACs. Dont bring a spoon to a knife fight, Colbert cautioned. But the audience roared when Sanders replied, I dont support the agenda of corporate America or the billionaire class. Adding that his average donation is $31.20, Sanders said his is a peoples campaign, not a billionaires campaign.
During Colberts monologue, the comedian compared his recent cover story in Time to this weeks cover piece on Sanders. And on Twitter, Colbert joked about someone (not Bernie) who parked his car right in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater.
Sanders shook hands with well-wishers before and after the show outside the theater.
