Starting hiring right now in the US so if and when this passes you are geared up to fulfill demands in Vietnam, Malaysia etc.
I like the no-waffle stance on TPP.

(4 posts)The 10,000 jobs just MAY be correct IF TPP passes....here is why:
Nike uses a carcinogenic solvent to promote adhesion between dissimilar polymer materials (that their shoes are made of). In order to get good bonding..they either must use this or invest in a clean, safe but more expensive technology (Plasma surface treatment...which changes the surface states of the materials and enables bonding/adhesion). They chose to close down their Beaverton, OR factory and move it to Thailand where the use of the carcinogenic solvent is allowed...in fact there are no restrictions on worker safety or disposal.
IF the TPP passes...they could "conceivably" bring back or open a new factory and use the same manufacturing process as in Thailand and Viet Nam....you see TPP would allow Nike to "sue" the US government for potential loss of future profits by "banning" or restricting Nike's manufacturing process. It is that "tribunal" process outlined in the TPP that would enable the trial and ruling OUTSIDE of our existing court system and outside of our existing environmental and worker protection laws. And many other companies could do the same. Since unemployment is high, those workers that were "displaced" years ago by Nike could be hired at a much lower wage and be "happy" to have a crappy job. It just MIGHT work for them. TPP needs to crash and burn!

And this is where Obama chose to visit.
This is certainly encouraging:
Nike has been subject to much critical coverage of the often poor working conditions and exploitation of cheap overseas labor employed in the free trade zones where their goods are typically manufactured. Sources for this criticism include Naomi Klein's book No Logo and Michael Moore documentaries.
...As of July 2011, Nike stated that two-thirds of its factories producing Converse products still do not meet the company's standards for worker treatment. A July 2011 Associated Press article stated that employees at the company's plants in Indonesia reported constant abuse from supervisors
