New York, like several other states, has closed primaries. You must be registered in a party to vote in that party's primary.

What's different about New York is the extremity of its provision against manipulation (think of Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" in 2008, when he urged Republicans to vote in Democratic primaries to prolong the Obama versus Clinton race). In New York, a change of party registration is ineffective until a general election intervenes, AND the change must be recorded by the deadline to register for that general election. Today's deadline is keyed to next month's general election, even though very few offices are at stake.

It's not quite as harsh as the OP states. If you aren't registered at all right now, I think you'd still be able to register as a Democrat and then vote in the primary in April. Today was the deadline for a change in party registration -- from Green or whatever to Democratic, or from independent to Democratic.

I can't wait to vote for Bernie and against my junior senator. I registered dem after being an independent since 2001.

I never will forgive her vote on the Iraq war, and Wall Street owns her. I'll probably have to vote for her in the general but I'll have to hold my nose.
