don't need 2 hours of free TV time, since Hillary can pay for as much as she wants and the Republicans could monopolize media for a while since Hillary wanted only four debates and delayed enough to disadvantage the other, less well known and less well funded candidates even more than they are already disadvantaged.

(45,251 posts)I will always frimly believe she was a Republican until she met Bill--and he's a Third Way triangulator who grew up in the Jim Crow South with Fullbright as his biggest political ally and mentor.
Things that allegedly happened before she met Bill that supposedly show that she turned away from Republicans before she met Bill are false or unverifiable and/or implausible.
Supposedly, she left the Republican National Convention that nominated Rockefeller when she heard racist comments. Unverifiable and unplausible. 17 or not, she was a Goldwater Girl and had heard it before.
Supposedly, she did a paper on Alinsky. Yes, attacking him. (This paper was kept secret by Wellesley during the 2008 primary, but was put online after that primary. Why was it soimportant to keep a college paper secret during the 2008 primary? )
Supposedly, she attacked Senator Brooke in her college graduation speech. I read the speech. No attack, at least not for any of his Republican views.
And BTW, even at 17, I would never have been a cheerleader for a Presidential candidate who thought Jim Crow was a states' rights issue--and I literally was a cheerleader at 17. (OK, stop laughing.)
RoccoR5955
(12,471 posts)well before 17.
If Clinton was 17 when she supported Goldwater, she should not go around saying that she has been a "lifelong" Democrat. In her early life she was a RepubliCON. When I was 17 I was backing Dems. When I was 7 I was backing Dems. There certainly IS a difference from what Clinton is calling herself, and from what many of us actually are.

His main opponent, imo, has not really gotten a handle on the issues that will continue to haunt her, and in some cases only raise more doubt.
Sanders was a ship that never had to take such a public broadside. He is showing himself to be an Old Ironsides. The hits leave a mark but he looks all the more impressive for having been through the test of fire. Secretary Clinton has shown she can take a hit, over, and over, and over. It's impressive in its way, but the damage is having an effect and I see her campaign as listing from it.

In reality she's got a point, many countries in europe are the size of states in the us)
or to phrase it more correctly
many of the states of the EU
are the same size as states of the US
either way
just because it works on a small scale doesn't mean it doesn't work on a large scale

(13,921 posts)it doesn't work on a large scale either.
I'm not sure you can credibly arguer that scaleability is really an issue when you are getting into the millions of people. ie a program supported by and supporting 5 million people, cant be used by a similar demographic that has 30 million people. Sure, what works for 100 may not work for 5 million. But 5 million to 10 million seems eminently doable. But it seems a lot like dating. A 15 year old dating a 25 year old looks a bit dodgy. But when you are 75, dating a 65 year old ain't such a big deal.
And even if there was some sort of scaleability issue.. So it works for Denmark. Denmark is more populous than the majority of our states. So you do it in Oregon. And then do it again in Nevada. And again in South Carolina. You dont have to scale, just repeat, and your problem solves itself.

Just one more reason I'm against her. It's the "careful Hillary"--
the POLITICALLY careful Hillary--
the same one that took forever to support gay marriage...
the same one that voted to give Bush power to make war on Iraq.

And he's demonstrating the way to talk about ideas that bring millions together.

He knows all kinds of paranoid fantasies have been encouraged by gun industry PR flacks and reformers need to tread carefully to welcome more people in to reforming a dangerous situation.
I can see value in Hillary's forthright approach but I also appreciate Bernie's more careful stance.

(2,212 posts)... when he kept going on, saying things like "You've given them 10 minutes!", that it got awkward. Not a good night for him. At the debate's end, I saw him shaking hands with the other candidates but not making eye contact with them, and it seemed he couldn't get off the stage fast enough. Actually, I feel a bit sorry for him at this moment. He and his wife do sound like good people who've accomplished a great deal.

(13,297 posts)I think you are right, it was unfortunate... but he's a politician and should know impressions matter, and it looks like he was unable to manage his emotions onstage at the smallest of things, and that does not bode well for how he might act on larger issues...

(2,212 posts)If he wanted more time, which was understandable, he needed to be able to cajole the narrator with some grace. He didn't manage that and came off looking a bit hot-headed. I wish him well in government, but he's not the president this country needs right now. (Although, I have to say, he has a point about China. )

(6,994 posts)she was only able to perhaps get to Bernie on the Socialist issue a little but the free education issue was more rhetoric for her and she knew his objective was for middle class families education.;.
Hillary brought up the issue about free education for Trumps kids? Bernie Sanders should have said and asked Hillary How many millionaires do you know that send their kids to public colleges?
The media will dissect this debate and bring out things out of context that will make her look like a political dream candidate and make Bernie out as a political outcast..
Hillary Clinton is the Wall Street Princess.

(1,240 posts)I think Bernie needs to focus his comments on socialism towards the things he stands for...Social Security, ACA/Medicare for all, free public Uni tuition, etc.
But while he does that he also needs to turn the vitriol republicans (and the MSM) spew about HIS socialism and point to their embracing of socialism, that being socializing risk and loss within banking, Wall street, Insurance companies. The middle class has been robbed bind by the right's version of socialism.
EVERY time someone throws his socialism in his face he needs to come back with THEIR socialism and contrast the 2.

(12,296 posts)I think he could have done just a tic better at explaining the difference between Democratic Socialism and 'the big evil fringe Socialism' that everyone - including McCaskill, Frank and Wasserman-Schultz - are painting him as part of. That's my only criticism.

(55,981 posts)instigate bad feelings but Sen Sanders didn't take the bait. He was on point at all time and not afraid to interrupt. HRC hedged on a number of issues. And when discussing the excesses of Wall Street that lead to the crash, she said, as NY Senator she went to Wall Street before the crash and asked them to back off their speculating. Sen Sanders heard that and nicely commented that Wall Street needs more than talking to.
HRC is also a master of rhetoric. She wants all Americans to have the opportunities to make it big like her and Bill. Sounds great but means absolutely nothing. Where Sen Sanders says he wants to tax Wall Street speculation to help pay for college educations, HRC says she wants students to work for their tuition and ask the states to keep tuition down. How terribly absurd. States will either ignore the plea or tell her to go to hell. Secondly, she apparently is out of touch with the fact that since she went to college, expenses have skyrocketed and wages haven't and jobs have been shipped overseas by corporate sponsored "Free Trade" deals.
