typified by the Ashcan School of the early 20th cent. The painting 'Dempsey and Firpo', 1924 by artist George Bellows is considered the greatest American sports painting. Bellows captured the moment US heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was punched 'through the ropes' by the larger Argentinian fighter. But in the 2nd round Dempsey came back to knock out Firpo and maintain his champion title.
The 1920s was an era of great American sports heroes like Jack Dempsey and Babe Ruth who became famous cultural icons of their time.
