I believe I was on vacation at the time and was shocked at the reporting I read and saw on this, an event that took place a block away from my workplace. The media was already in full-on bring-down-Bernie mode.
In the succeeding weeks I came to feel that this was one of those exceedingly rare examples of a very public ego succeeding in suppressing that ego with minimal display of umbrage and subsequently giving every sign of having turned it into a dramatically self-educational opportunity. Which he has continued to do well with ever since.

A lot of Americans don't realize that WWII and the NAZIs were about racism.
But they were.
The NAZIs considered the German "race"????? to be superior to all other people.
It's crazy, but then racism is crazy.
Nowadays, Americans would laugh if you told them that Jewish people were considered by the NAZIs to be a different race. But they were. That's what WWII was about to a surprising extent.
Bernie knows what it is to be part of a group that is targeted based on some crazy reason.
