(849 posts)The officer in Philly sitting in his car ducking 13 shots of which 3 hit him is being called an attempted execution.
I bet if he didn't before now favors some military gear like bulletproof humvees. For every person
calling police too tough there are those testing the toughness by trying to kill them.

(57,081 posts)2014. However, its not just the numbers you have to look at the manner of death is also important.
According to the NLEOMF, only 52 police officers were killed in the line of duty as a result of criminal activity. This is an overall decrease from the 61 who died as a result of criminal activity in 2014.
The number one cause of death of police officers in the line of duty was
Car accidents.

(1,786 posts)Why stop at just cops? Many, many more citizens were killed as well, so shouldn't we militarize them as well? Are cops the only special ones who should dress up like army? And many more civilians are killed by both cops and others.
If we count ALL people who should be armed to the teeth, I'm sure all killing will stop. /snark
And your last statement is completely false. For every person calling police too tough (about 40 million at least) there are those testing the toughness by trying to kill them? I didn't know that there were over 40 million attempts on cops lives. wow

(45,319 posts)are not Unionized, well compensated and protected by benefits. It's more dangerous to be in the fishing industry, to be a roofer, to be a pilot or flight engineer, a truck driver, any number of occupations have far more fatalities and far more major injuries. Law enforcement does not even make the top ten of most dangerous jobs. Ranchers, machinists, loggers, all suffer more injury and death that the police do.
Also, none of those other occupations take lives themselves, the police kill and injure more people than kill or injure them, loggers do not.
But somehow the cops are the most frequent whiners about the extreme fears they have on the job. 'If I wanted to be a hero, I'd fish for crab or work construction, policing should be totally safe except for the people the cops kill!!!!!'

(849 posts)Would be interesting to see the count of ranchers, machinists and loggers who have a criminal sneak up on them unseen and unload a 13 round magazine through their vehicle window with the intent to kill. As an ex-cop from the 70-80s era I don't disagree with your listed occupations have many more on the job accident and injury rates, but not intentional deadly assaults with intent to kill.
Yes policing should be totally safe, if no criminals existed.

(9,760 posts)No matter if the death is a result of intentional deadly assault: a job in which your chances of dying are greater is a more dangerous job.
Also, I would like to see how the statistics involving deadly assault of police officers are affected by a climate in which police officers are less likely to see deadly force as their own go-to action.

(2,284 posts)The goal of police is to protect and serve not attack and kill. Ex military hires must be demilitarized with training and counseling before being turned free on the public. Too many officers now look on the public as their enemies instead of their neighbors and friends,
