Approved bill would tighten family violence law in Guam
A bill to make Guam's family violence law tougher was among a dozen measures passed by the Legislature last week and sent to the governor.
The governor has 10 business days, or Nov. 9, to either sign or veto the bills
Flora Weilbacher, staff assistant for the governor’s legal counsel, said the governor's office has received the bills.
Among them is 173-34 COR, a measure introduced by Vice Speaker Therese Terlaje, D-Yona, which is intended to help protect victims of family violence by implementing tougher standards to hold accountable those who physically or emotionally abuse others.
Terlaje’s bill is intended to ensure that Guam’s family violence laws are enforceable and that related cases are successfully prosecuted by clarifying the definition of family violence. The bill followed the Supreme Court of Guam's September reversal of a family violence conviction because the law was vague.
