Biden praises Dick Cheney

Sorry, with this, it's a hard no in the primaries. if he is the nominee in the GE I will vote for him

This is from an event that took place in October of 2015
Link to full video:

Joe Biden: "I actually like Dick Cheney... I get on with him. I think he's a decent man."

He adds that Cheney was "extremely helpful" about the "legal parameters" of the VP office. Without irony.

Mondale then says his view of Cheney is "a little bit different." The crowd laughs

I don't see this falling out of that pledge:

Make the primary constructive. We'll make the primary election about our hopes for the future, and a robust debate of values, vision and the contest of ideas. We’ll remain grounded in our shared values, even if we support different candidates

This is in video, not a rumor. I clearly noted the date it was said and gave the link to the full video.

I think praising Cheney goes directly to a conversation about values as Democrats.

It seems like it’s on the edge of inappropriate. While I very much look forward to having Vice President’s Biden’s opinion on the War on Iraq and our other foreign wars, this is not the way to bring up this issue. It is information to be taken into account but It smells a little inflamatory. We need to know where he stand on this for sure. I think that Biden can change his stripes and evolve like any other human being. Is it keeping us busy fighting instead of reaching out to likely voters?

I was also unequivocal in my support for Biden if he is the GE nominee.

I have very few sore spots but more than anyone else, I blame Cheney for our current political situation.

But for Cheney there would be no trump.

The political environment and hate have s lot of their origins in Cheney and the inner circle he developed.

Some of us hav consistently been fighting for what we believe to the moral side of those arguments for decades.

But again, that's not the point. You or I changing as a regular citizen when there are no stakes beyond your own sense of morality and justice is one thing. Yes, a LOT of people do that on a LOT of issues.

A politician changing or "progressing" when they need to in order to gain support is another thing altogether.

Or evolving (as Obama did on gay marriage) once there was much less risk involved and other people had put in all of the work and struggle.

I'm not saying that applies to Joe on any or all of these, but just saying "we all change and progress" isn't enough. It is important to look at how long it took someone to progress and the curious timing of their progression.

Senator Sanders has hired for the top positions in his campaign.

Sirota has done false hit pieces on every candidate considered to be a threat to Senator Sanders.

You don’t see thst sort of thing from Harris, Warren, Booker, Beto, Biden’s campaigns. Those candidates aren’t out to falsely damage each other.

45. It's getting ridiculous...
Thu May 2, 2019, 05:48 PM
May 2019

It was posted by one of the Young Turks to feed the outrage machine.

Cheney was his immediate predecessor and had to help with the transition of power. I know so many people are disappointed Biden didn't spit in his face and shout, "WAR CRIMINAL!" as Cheney showed him around Number One Observatory Circle. It's called civility, and Biden acts that way because he's a decent man. You know who else he called decent? Mike Pence. He then had to clarify the context of his remarks because of the collective freakouts of the Cynthia Nixon's of the world.

Biden didn't give Cheney a pass. He astutely pointed out, among other things, Cheney couldn't have done all the things that he was able to do if Bush hadn't empowered him to do so. It's too bad few will realize the full context of everything in that forum because of their blind rage. (The Russians sure knew how to exploit this in 2016)

If people want to ever govern effectively again, we are going to have to learn to treat each other with more respect and use common sense. When there's no tolerance for saying anything remotely positive about our political opponents without the tribe revolting, our future is going to look far more grim than it does today.

If you don't remember, Cynthia Nixon helped cause his Pence comment to trend on Twitter with her direct criticism @ him. Biden then felt compelled to directly respond and clarify himself to her on Twitter. Nixon then wrote a Washington Post editorial days later, decrying "civility" and "politeness over policy." Progressives responded by widely praising her.

63. It's pretty simple really. These people are all in the same social group.
Thu May 2, 2019, 06:25 PM
May 2019

And any social groups has norms of behavior. Among the Washington elite, the rule is that you can bash each other in public, but you don't take it personally, in private you are "decent," to each other, even when you disagree. This helps get things done, and prevents Washington from exploding.

So all Biden is saying is that people like Cheney and Pence follow the rules of polite society, but Trump doesn't. For Trump, politics is personal, and that's the real crime for Biden.

This was years ago before he was VP. I can honestly say being in the same room with him made the hair on my neck stand up. Sure he was patronizing and contemptuous, but it was something far more disturbing.

Women may well have more ability to pick up on that, but geez, Joe. What the hell? It isn't as though you've not had to deal with some of the most truly evil people on earth. Cheney may not be Osama Bin Laden, but he is surely NOT a "good" man.

I think the meetings were about public land access in a state, maybe Wyoming, idk, anyway, he liked him back then, said he was pretty decent to work with. Cheney is an evil doer, I have no doubts about that, but I think he parks his mad dog persona at the door & is probably less of a prick when he's having one on one meetings so Biden may have been right in his description, &, I think its Biden's way not to be too controversial. That way has changed by now I'm sure. Don't see this as a disqualifier.

Thu May 2, 2019, 07:13 PM
May 2019

Mondale was recalling how Cheney said early on that he was going to take things to the dark side, and Mondale believes he really did. Cheney wouldn’t respond to subpoenas, stiffed Congress, worked with his key guys to bring about the Torture Memo...Mondale says he thought those were bad days in the history of the Vice Presidency.

Soon after, Biden starts talking about the New Yorker toon somebody gave him: Cheney is showing him around the VP residence, and they're in the basement and there are things like manacles hanging on the wall. Biden says he's standing behind Cheney in the toon and Cheney says—and here Biden deepens his voice to mimic Cheney's—“Joe you might want to make some decorating changes.”

There, I hope I gave you enough context. Biden made a joke about torture.

collegial feeling between Dems and Reps. But this was from 2015 - and after the horror of years of endless wars and the lying to get us into Iraq. It's not a good look. Praising a colleague that you worked with on bipartisan legislation is one thing. Calling Cheney a decent man is going too far. Helping Biden adjust to the VP office is expected in a transitional period. And if he was cordial and pleasant - that's very nice. But it's not worthy of praise. Civility is literally killing us.

Trump and other Republicans are wiping their ass with the Constitution and putting babies in cages and creating significant ecological and economic harm that may take decades to repair.

They are creating divisions with our allies that may never recover.

The time for civility is long gone.

We are the only ones playing with a rulebook anymore. We are playing by rules that don't exist anymore.

Unless we get control of these situations and start holding Republicans, especially trump, legally accountable for their actions than our republic is in serious jeopardy. This is the most significant challenge to our republic since the Civil War.

Cheney has been a vile human being, in his personal life and in his professional life.

When it comes to making public comments about Cheney, you don't need to say anything nice but follow the principle "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all".

Biden takes the high road and looks calm, collected, and Presidential. Let the surrogates get dirty in the trenches, that's the way it should work. Dropping to trump's level will turn off the middle independents, the voting bloc we have to attract for the general.

That boat sailed when they denied every congressional subpoena, refused to testify to Congress and have thumbed their nose at your decorum and rules.

I dont give a shit about kissing the ass of a bunch of center-right fence sitters.

If we do not hold trump legally accountable there won't be a republic to win.

Biden
"I have a harsh view of how the vice presidency, the office was used. So that's why I never, I mean he knew because I was in the Senate during this period, he knew my strong disagreement. Remember he was talked about being an independent in that he was not executive, he was not legislative, he was...I don't know what he was."

Mondale
"He was everything"

Biden
"That could not have happened without President Bush permitting it to happen. So that's why I said it was a very different relationship. And I think at the end of it, it appeared he had lost President Bush's confidence. At the end, because of a lot of things I guess. But in terms of the transition he was extremely gracious. But there's no similarity between the office."

He then briefly explained a possible factor between the relationship difference between Bush-Cheney and Obama-Biden was Cheney appeared to be writing the agenda, whereas Obama and Biden "had no ideological differences". They disagreed on tactical stuff but could work with it.

Pretty sure most all of our candidates have said something over the years that is embarrassing now.

I am all about unity and winning and destroying Trump.

If some DU’ers want to focus on destroying their fellow Democrats rather than Trump I guess that’s their choice. Certainly nothing wrong with that I suppose. But with Trump in the White House it just isn’t my thing.

We have to win in 2020.

on a personal level. The political world is really a small little club.

Just to throw this out there, but recall that Michelle Obama and George W. Bush are very close friends. In fact, Michelle has said many times that he is “a kind, sweet man and I love him”

We still love Michelle, don’t we?

And to be clear: I also think Cheney is Satan.

And her "kind, sweet man" comment is more analogous to what Biden said about Cheney being helpful & gracious during the transition—as you say, a personal-level comment. It wasn't a pronouncement on his character.

In the video, Mondale was able to make it clear that yes, Cheney was kind to him too, and his wife Joan, but he was able to avoid saying anything about Cheney's character. He just talked about the things Cheney did, so you could infer from that what he thought.
