Congratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!
Bernie 2.0: More professional this time, and more personal
AP NewsNEW YORK (AP) A young civil rights activist named Bernard Sanders was arrested and dragged off to jail for protesting school segregation on the South Side of Chicago in the summer of 1963.
Most voters didnt learn about that episode until photos surfaced in late February 2016, almost 10 months into the Vermont senators first presidential campaign. Sanders had been struggling to win over African-American voters, but his topsy-turvy campaign team didnt know such powerful evidence of his civil rights bona fides existed until five days before South Carolinas primary.
Sanders lost the Southern contest, which is heavily influenced by the black vote, by almost 50 points.
As he launches his second presidential campaign this weekend, Sanders and his team are determined not to repeat the same mistake. The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist will hold high-profile rallies in Brooklyn and Chicago, where hell open up about his working-class roots and early activism including the arrest as he tries to prove hes learned from his 2016 stumbles.

(7,447 posts)1. As an African American
it's great that Bernie was involved with the Civil Rights movement.
Full stop, it is.
But that doesn't inoculate him for all time. He has had clear struggles in understanding AA issues and problems.
He has until recently seemed to believe that economic solutions will solve not just economic problems, but racial and gender problems as well.
More stories about the 60s aren't going to do much to increase his vote percentage among AAs.

I think that's what he's counting on. I know his supporters are. And when his shortcomings are questioned or criticized, when he stumbles and sticks his foot in his mouth... the "Bernie being arrested" photo will be the "response".

We've heard them all before. At this point, it's rote and perfunctory.
It's clear where he stands. Nothing is going to change it. This is a major flaw with his campaign and it's why he will fail in his quest to be our party's nominee.
