We've updated our N.H. primary rankings and there's a new front-runner

Two months ago, the Globe put out its initial rankings of where the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates would finish if the New Hampshire primary were held today. A lot has changed since then, so it’s time to revisit our list.

Let’s start with South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg. He’s become a liberal sensation, stealing a lot of the buzz from former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, even before O’Rourke joined the race. Now O’Rourke is officially running, along with former vice president Joe Biden and others including Representative Seth Moulton of Salem. Indeed, in March, there were 15 major Democratic candidates. Today there are — count ‘em! — 22 candidates, the largest field ever.

What’s unique about New Hampshire right now is that there appears to be an early forming top tier. In the Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll of 800 likely New Hampshire voters released this week, the top four candidates alone received 53 percent of support. And while 24 Democratic candidates were polled, 14 of them failed to register above 1 percent of support.

This has made it tough to assess the 2020 Democratic New Hampshire field, were the primary held today. Factors used in the ranking below include the sparse New Hampshire-centric polling that exists, but also on-the-ground reporting that evaluates the buzz among local activists and what kind of campaign operations exist for each candidate.

Bernie’s votes for Charlie Manson and the Boston Bomber puts his chances in the GE at zero. Yang’s Freedom Dividend is off the wall.

That is one reason a lot of people like him.

AS democrats we are all against voter suppression. Mass incarceration and over charging of minorities has been the DE FACTO tool to disenfranchise black and latinos thru out our history.

I feel Sanders is absolutely correct in saying that the fundamental right to vote should not be stripped away by such systemic racism.

Tens and tens of thousands of African American and Latino men have been imprisoned for crimes whites are not charged with or not nearly at the same rate. May hundreds of thousands, our prison system is that immense.

I don't care of Manson and bombers get to vote under Sanders plan, they are too few in number to matter compared to the vast number of people whose civil rights have and continue to be taken from them.

Cory Booker has commented many times about this unfairness:

"But when Cory Booker, the New Jersey senator and 2020 presidential candidate, looks at the question of legalizing cannabis, he sees the stakes very differently. For Booker, the real problem is the unjust enforcement of marijuana laws — against black and brown Americans, whose usage rates are no different than their white counterparts but who are arrested at astronomically higher rates."

I know. And also do not care how offensive this is to the many Americans who do care a whole lot. Of all the hills on which to make a stand.

Yes, I am sure that many Americans might find it offensive having the worst of the worse voting in our prisons.

Many American feel that way, probably most American at the moment, to be honest.

The only problem is those same Americans, the majority of Americans are not similarly offended by tens and tens of thousands of African American and Latino men being over charged, mass incarcerated and disenfranchised by a systemically racist prison system.

So which hill to make a stand on...

Not offending the sensibilities of people not in prison that object to prisoners voting? And People that might have lost love ones to those murderers?

or...

Putting an end to the biggest, nastiest voter suppression tool that has been used to keep the minority communities down?

Honestly, on balance, I will stand on the hill trying to correct a gross societal injustice, everything considered.

But, obviously, many Americans, hell, most Americans don't care about that. Well, not yet, but change has to start somewhere.

Thank you for discussing this issue. I realize I am in the minority by holding this view, all I can do is explain why I hold it. Thanks for giving me this opportunity.
