Quite a few things need to be done before working families have a real chance of building a future for themselves and their kids, U.S. senator from Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren wrote in an op-ed for The Boston Globe on Monday.
Recalling her time spent searching for a job soon after graduating law school in 1976, Warren described feeling unemployable because she was pregnant with her second child at the time.
That was before the landmark Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was signed into law, but Warren said not enough has changed in the time since.
Though the FMLA allows eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons, Warren said workers need more financial support when taking time off to care for a newborn or loved one.

Warren added that passing an equal-pay law is necessary for closing the gender wage gap and would add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional wages over a lifetime of work for women doing the same jobs as their male colleagues.

Once a long time ago and newly married I applied for a job, late 70's. A woman interviewed me, she was the Executive VP. One of her questions? Do you plan to start a family soon. This from a woman with children. I did a double take and said not to my knowledge. JFC!

Plus would ANY man in a job interview be asked if they were planning to start a family soon? I think not.
On top of that. I know what it is like to take care of ailing family members while working. You are not given time. You are distracted at work and it makes it hard to do your job properly. They have no fucks to give about you or yours. Happened to me.
Gah!
Thanks, mcar.

(713 posts)Thanks for posting this. I am still Undecided, but I am liking Warren more and more as I learn about her. The main things I like about her is her Progressive Values, plus the fact that she is wonkish and talks explicitly about Policies to back up her values.
I am not seeing so much clear policy information from most of the other Democratic Candidates. Too much style, not enough substance. Warren is providing more substance than them. I like Elizabeth, and she is in top contention for me as a voter.
