In Iowa, Beto O'Rourke says non-union members should pay union dues

Workers represented by unions should pay bargaining fees regardless of whether they decide to be union members, Beto O’Rourke said in Des Moines on Monday.

More than 150 people came to the United Steel Workers Local 310 to hear the El Paso Democrat speak in an event hosted by the Asian and Latino Coalition, a part of his five-day trip across the state.

Daniel Garza, a union pipefitter, asked O’Rourke if he would commit to a federal "fair share law," which he said would give unions the power to collect money from non-union members for the work of collective bargaining.

"Everyone needs to pay into the benefits that they gain as a result of those who are willing to organize and fight," O'Rourke answered.

Totally agree - don't be a freeloader! walkingman May 2019 #1
Or maybe non-union workers don't get the negotiated benefits? Highly unlikely but... TreasonousBastard May 2019 #2
That would be tough. The corporations in right-to-work states intentionally pay non-union brewens May 2019 #3

workers the same. That is of course to make workers feel there is no reason to join the union and pay dues. That weakens the union, to eventually get rid of it they hope.

The paper mill in my town is the biggest employer and I'm told almost no new hires join the union now. The contract is being negotiated right now and management wants to stick it to them with a high deductible and out of pocket medical plan. One option is a two tiered plan. New employees will get screwed and the old hands keep their good medical. So far the union guys are sticking to their guns and not selling out. We'll see what happens. There are a large number of the I got mine types too.

Even my brother-in-law is a republican and he was supervisor out there and union rep. He treats my sister well (not that he has any choice if he even thinks he knows me) so I don't get into it with him. He was all about Obama gittin' his gunz though and I called him on that! I bet him $500 bucks, four or eight years, whatever it might be, he would have no guns confiscated for any reason. Nope. Wouldn't do it. He has no assault type weapons either.

The majority of them are republicans. I guess I give them a little slack because I don't feel our side has held up their end for labor. They vote white-wing for a lot of reasons. Lower taxes for one, which is delusional!

The union teachers worked hard to pass a law in Indiana that teachers who didn't belong to the union still had to pay their fair share for negotiations (all get the benefit of the negotiated contracts). When Daniels was governor, and with a big GOP majority, they trashed the law and now the scabs get most of the benefits for free again.
