How Democrats Will Prevent a Hijack of Their Nomination

Political Wire

In response to news that a conservative filmmaker is attempting to qualify for the Democratic debates in order to disrupt the nomination process, a member of the Democratic National Committee emails:

As part of the Rules and Call of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, the DNC passed a “bona fide” Democrat rule: essentially, if you are not a bona fide Democrat, you cannot run for our nomination. This is a several step process, with power vested in the Chair to make the final decision.

Many news outlets incorrectly promoted this rule as an attack upon Bernie Sanders, but the reality is that this was put into place in order to prevent a Mark Zuckerberg or Howard Schultz from buying their way to our nomination, using our hard-earned data, and losing in a terrible campaign against Trump. The rule would never be used against Sen. Sanders, and in fact I was told that the draft rule was run by him before it was brought to the Membership, and he had agreed to it.

Of course, all of his supporters in the DNC also voted for this as part of the larger reform package (which included changes to superdelegates). As I said, many in the media got this wrong in an attempt to further exacerbate divisions and inflame tensions between the Bernie and Hillary wings of the Democratic Party. It was a shame.

Will Marianne Williamson be allowed in the debates (when she ran for congress in 2014 she ran as an independent) ?

2. Schultz himself says he's not a Democrat.

"I’ve been a Democrat, but I am no longer," Schultz said, adding, "I don’t affiliate myself with the Democratic Party, who’s so far left, who basically wants the government to take over health care, which we cannot afford, the government to give free college to everybody, and the government to give everyone a job. ... We can’t afford it."

3. Yes, but that was from when he announced he wouldn't run for President in the Democratic primaries.

Until that point he has always been a Democrat and if he had decided not to break from the party to consider an independent run the "must be a Democrat" rule wouldn't have stopped him from participating in the Democratic primaries.

As I knew about his considering an independent run I should have written "was a lifelong Democrat" rather than "is a lifelong Democrat".

5. He was still distancing himself from the party on Fox News last month.

He may have been a lifelong Democrat prior to the past few months, but he seems to continue insisting that he isn't one now. It seems that he wants to have it both ways.

His chances weren't that great before, but portraying the party as the loonie left was likely the kiss of death. And incredibly dumb.

I prefer closed primaries or primaries where independents can pull a ballot for whichever party they chose, as long as they have been indies since the last national election in their state or came of voting age after that election.
