Sanders will also endorse the NAACPs moratorium on public funds for charter school expansion until they are audited at the national level and will support halting the use of public funds to underwrite new charter schools, campaign spokeswoman Sarah Ford told The Hill in a statement.
The senator also aims to hold existing charters accountable by giving them the same oversight requirements as public schools, requiring teachers and parents to make up half of charter school boards, mandating financial interest disclosures and other measures.
Sanders's plan will be called the "Thurgood Marshall Plan For Public Education and Educators."
Sanders will unveil the proposal in a South Carolina speech, CNN reported Friday, and will make the case that black people are disproportionately hurt by charter schools because they take money away from public schools.

(31,261 posts)And not redirect public funds to charter schools.
Exactly how is Bernie's position more supportive of public schools than the democratic party's position for the last decade and a half?

(31,261 posts)Democrats would not start charter schools at all, instead directing more money, teachers and resources to standard public schools. This has been a long standing Democratic Party position and has been implemented fairly well in deep blue states.

(31,261 posts)should instead be directed toward standard public schools that must take any student. So the position that I am sure ALL Democratic Party members support without question or special press releases is the standard party position that NO charter school can exist if standard public schools are underfunded. So their position goes beyond banning them, under the party position they would never exist, that position has been longstanding. I believe that if Senator Sanders was in tune with long term party platforms, he would understand that and would not need to make a "special" announcement.

(31,261 posts)take much needed funds from standard public schools, while being selective about what students they select for entry. Standard public schools have to accept any kid in it's service area that show up at it's door.
This stuff is not rocket science and Senator Sanders is not advocating anything that has not already been said and acted on for the last decade and a half, if not longer than that.

(2,113 posts)Charter schools are very popular in my state, and they are honestly necessary because public schools are so crowded and many areas are growing quickly in population.

(31,261 posts)One thing that I can say about the leadership in my red county, they don't monkey around too much with schools and insure that schools stay balanced integrated. They also encourage racial integration of neighborhoods via policies. The South fought integration of schools, that is well known. My county was part of that. Integration of schools became the law in May 1954, my county did not start integrating it's schools until around 1969, mostly because the Governor then, the Great Reuben Askew stated that all public schools would immediately integrate, including colleges, and he followed through. My county administrators did a smart thing, which is still smart today. Instead of studying population maps to maintain mostly Black and White schools, they looked at how they could mostly integrate all schools. A second high school was built and the old Black high school was turned into a middle school, totally integrated. The two high schools were integrated well and today are athletic and academic rivals more that fifty years later (more high schools and other schools were built as the population grew and assignment maps were adjusted to insure that all remained well integrated and equally funded.
My red county solved the increasing population by building standard public schools to absorb more students, not taking money away from public schools to start charter schools. The county does allow some schools to have focal areas of excellence, say kids that are artistic can petition to go to the elementary school that focus a little more in that area. But overall, schools are kept balanced.
