Amy Klobuchar Faces Down Fox News' Chris Wallace for Asking if Democrats Too 'Extreme' on Abortion

“You talk about the extreme, as you called it, on one side, let me make the case, and you can answer it on the other side, because folks say that one of the concerns is that a number of Democratic senators are not willing to see restrictions on late term abortions, abortions after 24 weeks as we enter the third trimester,” Wallace said. “Now that’s only 1% of all abortions in the country, but even 1% is 6,000 abortions after 24 weeks, when a fetus might well be viable. Are you okay with that?”

“I’m okay with the law, Chris,” Klobuchar said. “And what the law says is that in that third trimester, it is allowed to protect the health and the life of the mother.”

“But that’s not what the president said, Chris,” Klobuchar continued, taking on Trump’s “execute the baby” lie. “The president misled the American public. What he said at a rally was basically a doctor would be holding a baby, and kill, and kill that baby. That’s illegal under the law. That is already a crime…”

Wallace interrupted, called Trump’s accusation of baby executions an “overstatement,” and again asked “Are you okay with abortions after 24 weeks?”

“To protect the life and the health of the mother,” Klobuchar replied. “That is exactly what the supreme Court ruling says. And I am okay with that.”

“But I just think it’s really important, Chris, for your Fox viewers to know, because there’s so much misinformation out there, that what these laws do is extreme,” Klobuchar continued. “There are number of Republicans who said they are opposed to them. They are extreme.”

“Then you have the president misleading the public, and telling them that this is about basically killing a baby after a baby is born. That is not what this is about, that is a crime,” Klobuchar said. “So I think what people have to understand here is that we are at a point where a number, it is not just Alabama, this has happened in Ohio, this has happened in Missouri, this happened in Georgia, there’s a law that’s being passed in Michigan that the Democratic governor is going to veto. This is happening across the country, and people need to know what’s really going on here. This is a violation of civil rights.”

Good for Amy - this is WHAT they always do..... try and twist it. So Dems get questions on their extreme position when the Republican War on Women has just gone into over drive.....

No, it's a lie--end of story. Time to confront every single journalist on why Trump gets his "overstatements" unlike every other POTUS to date. Words should matter, journalists need to provide policing or chaos will result.

And he did not challenge that. So, Trump lied (or overstated) or he is completely ignorant of both the law and Democratic positions.

"Overstatement"takes the media's unwillingness to call Republican lies, lies to a new level. Not to mention, does he remember the media going after Gore for supposed "exaggeration". I also have seen them give a large number of pinnocheos because in a long speech a Democrat got one number wrong.

part of the Republican long game. Now that they have refused to consider Merrick Garland when Obama was president, and installed Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, the states are passing these draconian laws to test and overturn Roe-v-Wade.

I'm thinking the only solution is to completely repudiate these awful pretend-'christians' at the polls.

I did send a snarky email to the AL tourism group. I told them to look for a giant sucking sound as anyone who can leaves the state.

They are also passing these laws now and in a Hurry because they do see the writing on the wall about the Tangerine Traitor and know their window is closing. If the crimes are as bad as many of us think, the GOP will be In the desert for a while and (god forbid) women might regain some ground.

I've heard snippets from several speeches by Republican operatives that say, in effect, "This could all end soon."

And so it should! It SHOULD end soon. We have to make it end soon - November 2020. Let that day be the day when Americans everywhere repudiate these disgusting policies and make clear to ourselves and the world that we are a nation of immigrants, that we want a government that serves ALL the people, not just fearful white men, corporations and billionaires.

To get out of this mess we are going to need everyone's hard work right now and every last vote in the coming elections. With this Administration's refusal to do anything to protect the election, IDK. Democracy hangs by a thread my friends.

If we get out of this one and come into power again, some serious, serious changes need to occur.

Decent behavioral norms that were respected by all parties in the past are going to need to be codified into law and actually enforced this time. Or they'll be disregarded and used against us yet again.

Time to get to work people.

And she did a great job at her CNN town hall. I think Buttigieg is modeling himself after her quiet, effective approach.

Her message about abortion is exactly that one that America needs to hear.

We have many strong women running for the democratic nomination. I know that Biden has emerged as the heir apparent, but we are shortchanging ourselves and the American people by not putting women who are running out in front.

The Roe decision should be required reading in school. It lays out the history of abortion, the spectrum of laws that were used to control women under the guide of abortion, and the reasoning behind the decision. It is a landmark defense of women's rights and a masterfully written judicial opinion. Everything anyone needs to bolster the pro-choice position as being the only moral choice can be found in the document.

Klobuchar has decided to occupy the "moderate" niche during this campaign. Thus, it's all the more important that her position on choice be so clear and defensible.

No waffling, no apologies, just a defense of choice as it has stood since 1974: this is a moderate position and articulation that I can embrace.

I have a different response to Republican propaganda. It goes like this. I point at them in the eye and say "What the fuck are you talking about. Stop the fucking lying. Get the fuck out of my sight. I have no time to suffer morons and idiots. "
