Buttigieg shuts down a conservative talking point about abortion rights

A Fox News anchor tried to ambush Buttigieg on the subject. He didn’t take the bait.
While discussing the recent laws passed in Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio — which severely restrict access to abortions — Fox News anchor Chris Wallace sought to press Buttigieg on just when the cutoff point should be for when a woman can access an abortion. “Do you believe, at any point in pregnancy, that there should be any limit on a woman’s right to an abortion?” Wallace wanted to know.

It’s a framing that’s increasingly used by conservatives to provoke outrage about abortions: as illustrated by repeated comments from the President, such statements falsely suggest that there’s a preponderance of individuals opting to engage in abortions very late in their pregnancies, and that they’re doing so to actively hurt babies.

As Buttigieg emphasized to Wallace, however, not only is the proportion of women getting an abortion in the third trimester very small, the decision to have an abortion — at any point in pregnancy — should be a woman’s choice.“The dialogue has gotten so caught up in where you draw the line. I trust women to draw the line,” he said.

Wallace followed up and pressed Buttigieg on that point, but the Mayor did not change his stance. Buttigieg’s response highlights just how much conservative critiques of abortion rights have focused far more on fear-mongering, than they do on addressing the realities of when people have abortions. “You would be okay with a woman well into the third trimester to obtain an abortion?” Wallace asked.

“These hypotheticals are set up to provoke a strong emotional reaction,” Buttigieg noted.

“These aren’t hypotheticals—there are 6,000 women a year who get an abortion in the third trimester—” said Wallace.

“That’s right, representing less than 1 percent of cases a year,” Buttigieg responded.

somebody as stupid and just sleep walking as Wallace.

republicans do not know when to use their brains, their feelings or their bodies.. ESPECIALLY the brain... They exist using gut, emotional, physical responses to things that must be dealt with with the brain.

And they dont understand the difference between emotions and feelings, that being that emotions just 'happen,' automatically. They are to a great degree, although not always, useless. There is no control. Feelings, on the other hand, are generated 'intentionally.'

Chris Wallace has no 'feeling.' He is like a baseball sitting on a T. He has no idea how he got there and no way to get off. He is powerless.. Until some child walks up and wacks him off.

Unless of course you think it better to avoid criticizing other candidates "constructively" or not. I have a lot of Biden positions I'd like to talk about. And a lot of Beto's early votes I'd like to talk about. I would consider them constructive. But then they would be factual rather than opinion. "Unprepared" is an opinion. He answered truthfully.

She felt it, and she and her doctor went into the delivery room just hoping it wasn't so. My brother and I were preschool age, but we had been prepared for the arrival of a new baby and had to be told the baby was born dead.

Anyhow, a question occurs to me 68 years later: if my mother's body had not managed to expel that dead baby -- and at two weeks gone he was actually decaying in the womb -- there would have been few options for saving her life.

I wonder if the assholes who today go on and on about abortions at full-term would have called that necessary procedure an abortion. I bet they would.
