Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIt's Joe Biden's 2020 presidential nomination to lose
We may be several months from the first ballots being cast for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, but former Vice President Joe Biden is running away with the race. Yes, anything conceivably could happen between now and when the Democrats officially select their nominee next summer, but Biden is firmly entrenched in the catbird seat and will likely stay there barring a major turn of events.
According to the most recent RealClearPolitics average of national surveys, Biden is leading the 20-plus candidate field by more than 16 points. Biden is also leading in the Democrats first four February 2020 nominating contests: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.
Now, contrarians, on both the left and the right, have and will continue to argue a litany of reasons why Biden wont win the nomination. They claim that not only is Biden a white male, but hes also too old to be the nominee. They contend that history is against Biden given that this is his third quest for the Democrats highest nomination. They assert Biden is gaffe-prone and the energy and future of the party lies with the progressive wing, not with a swamp creature with a 36-year-long Senate career of appeasement to corporate interests. Or they will say that Biden is simply just the beneficiary of high name identification. They also insist it is way too early to make such a proclamation because there are still 12 sanctioned primary debates on the calendar. All of these rebuttals are wishful thinking.
Biden is the undisputed Democratic frontrunner, period.

(58,785 posts)into horse race range -- with of course prognostications that he's going to lose incoming from all directions. But I believe it's good for our party to have a stand-out favorite who large numbers can feel good about right from the beginning. Much better than a close-packed pack with all the negative pessimistic noise and propaganda that'd generate.
We also need others to rise in the polling, of course, as some good ones are beginning to. We need good, electable leaders in our pockets for the future, and several at least deserve it and will benefit the nation by becoming well known.

(2,113 posts)He appears to be taking it for granted that he will win and doesn't appear to even be really campaigning. He has no upcoming events listed until June 14th, which is the only thing listed on his page and has only had 8 events since entering the race. His official campaign site is lacking in policy substance as well. The early primary states reward candidates who show up. Right now Biden isn't really showing up. By not showing up anywhere he isn't making his usual gaffes and stepping in it. I'm in no way confident that he will be able to muster the self control required to not screw things up. I don't like that he's sort of hiding out and not putting himself out there. It leaves the impression that he is acting entitled and I think if he continues to not vigorously campaign that it will come back to bite him in the rear.
