Pete Buttigieg Tells Democrats How To Cancel The Trump Horror Show
Pete Buttigieg said that it is time for America to ignore Trumps distractions and talk about what they want instead of Trump.
Transcript via ABCs This Week:
RADDATZ: You talk about changing the channel, how do you do do that with President Trump? It it works for him.
BUTTIGIEG: It does, but part of how it works for him is he provokes us in ways that make it very hard for us to do anything but respond in kind, the nicknames, the tweets, the insults. And what weve got to remember is that the more were talking about him, the less were talking about voters.
When the conversation is about voters, were going to win. Voters want a raise. They want health care. On almost all of the issues, the American people are with us. It is precisely for that reason that the only way the Republican Party can retain power in the White House is if the conversation is about something completely different, like the shenanigans of the current president.

Buttigieg was right. If the conversation in 2020 is about you instead of him, Democrats will do very well in the election. If Trump is able to distract and manipulate his way through the campaign, Democrats will struggle to break through. Washington is a horror show under Trump. It is also a do nothing executive branch that is being enabled by Republican Senate majority to do less than the bare minimum of governance.
The election needs to be about healthcare, wages, Trumps failed trade war, and other issues that matter in the lives of people. Impeachment is a nice thought, but it plays into Trumps hands by giving him a distraction that allows him to make the election about himself.
The way to beat the Trump horror show is to not allow it to hijack the 2020 election.

I could do with never hearing any candidate called sleepy, crazy, crooked, low-energy etc, etc, etc.

This has to stop being cult of personality debating, and start being about real governing, not fake crisis and spectacle.

(1,702 posts)Nothing will change his base when media presents him and his unhinged views, lies and positions (or lack there of).
No talking head panels with left pov and right pov "discussing" the latest outlandish interview, news reports or rally speech will convince either those hating him and those loving him to change their views.
No logic and facts will change either sides position. Claiming that we have to chip away and pick up a few % points of his base or the undecided is too much effort for not enough result.
I have heard, read and know enough to have my opinion solidified about him and the Republican enablers. The other side is no different than me.
Every Democratic candidate needs to heed Mayor Pete's words and view. Here comes the "BUT"....
But, the media makes $$$$ with headlines and I don't think they would choose to print, air "Biden calls for Health-care for everyone" versus " tRUMP calls Biden a mother fucking socialistic pig" . Hence the dilemma of fighting fire with fire or fire with facts and how the media will either be complicit as they were in 2015-16 and appear to be now.
Taking the air away from tRUMP and his insanity is the ONLY way IMO to mute him (of course his cult will still hear, follow and vote for him) but speaking to the minds and hearts of voters who have heard enough of his hate, lies and racism and those who want and need the programs and views of what many of the Democratic candidates offer must be tried. I hope the media grasps this and what it will mean for them in terms other than $$$.
Just sayin..

(17,276 posts)It didn't matter about the red hat guys. It didn't matter about Dirty Don's attempts to incite fear or distract.
The rest of us were mad enough to come out in huge numbers to vote. It might be that some of those red hats were a bit bored or fed up and stayed home.
Granted the Presidential election will make more people come out to vote. But still, I think the Dems can do this.

I don't read about his Tweets if I can avoid it, and I don't feel like I've missed out on being informed about current events. His administration is going to be a shitshow until the day he is expelled from the White House.
This bears repeating; spread the message far and wide:

(1,076 posts)Now. Hes said it. What Ive been hearing this cycle is a focus on the people. In the last presidential cycle I thought an element was missing. The rural Americans. Somewhere I read that HRC did not visit a few of the states she lost in the E College.
Im glad to see the focus on the people and not kowtow to capitalistic interests.
Watched Mayor Pete and Rachel recently, two Rhodes Scholars, and found the conversation interesting. Very articulate.

(37,648 posts)As John Kerry learned the hard way, if you ignore nonsense or attacks, that leaves the nonsense & attacks out there in the stratosphere, without the reality and facts to counter it. The nonsense and attacks will be all there is for the masses to believe in.
So, I don't know. We are in uncharted territory. The nonsense of the tweets, the Trump reality show, is actually furthering a plan of action in the U.S. that is unprecedented. Tweets about declaring a national emergency for the wall, are following by the declaration. Tweets about Puerto Rico are followed by not giving Puerto Rico disaster funding. The reality show is a show, followed by action with the assistance of other Republicans.
Democrats DO point out the dangers in his policies. But in so doing, it by default recognizes the tweets and rhetoric and reality show that talk about the policies.
Hillary ignored being called Nasty and "Lock her up." Kerry ignored "Swift Boat" negative ads. Biden is not ignoring a single slight, I assume because he recognizes that to do so, leaves the negativity out there with no opposite view, no reaction. So people assume the negative tweet is true.

(1,103 posts)questions intentionally meant to create conflict? ...when he answers these and other ridiculous questions, before he finishes his first sentence he is talking about what HE wants to talk about, not what they want to goad him into saying. I think that is what drives the MSM crazy. That is a very good way to get off a subject and onto something of substance.

I know he will answer back, but that's the issue. He'll be responding to attacks without getting his policies and vision out.

(4,341 posts)Two things:
1. Everyone needs to understand that the buffoon is nothing but a decoy, and a very good one. He is there to distract while people like Pence, Stephen Miller cook up the evil deeds.
2. The more wee talk about the creature the more power we give it, we need to stop talking about the latest stupidity the creature spews, when we start isolating him he will slowly disappear, he will die in despair from not being noticed, he will yell louder, he will spew more proofs of his evil nature while compromising himself deeper into crimes such as obstruction of justice.
I just wish the media would begin to ignore him, just like Rachel Maddow does about his tweets.

(17,276 posts)1. Dismiss what Trump has said quickly with something like, "well that's just wrong" but not spend any time on his awfulness. (When a child has a tantrum and is kicking his heels on the floor, the best thing you can do is leave the room for a few minutes.)
2. Launch right into what you want to do for Americans and the country. What is broken that needs to be fixed. And I do think they are trying to do this.
I think one problem is members of the media who are addicted to covering the distractions. It's hard to quit because it's so easy!

(14,490 posts)Every time a Democrat is asked a question about tRump, just automatically respond with "Trump is a liar" or simply "that is a lie" and then move on to a substantive political comment. Keep pounding those words 'till people puke. Should the host press for more, just say because he is a serial liar, we don't believe anything he says is valid. In other words, completely cover him in black paint.
The words "lie" and "liar" have an emotional impact on most everyone and most people despise liars. We need to stop playing candy-ass nice and using statements like "that's not true" or "that's not correct".
Over time, that practice might also shame our media into stopping sensationalizing his every tweet and movement. We can tell them that if they continue to support a liar and not call him out, we will assume their advertisers are lying to us as well.
tRump has zero respect for decorum so why should we?.........

(53,061 posts)"And I can prove it"
"Trump is lying and I can prove it"
"That is a lie and I can prove it."
Since I started using this in a calm voice about 5vyears ago I have had spectacular results. In general people repeating Fox news spin sense there is something wrong and when presented with an assertion that it can be proved it stops the discussion.
If delivered without hostility it can generate an even friendly, "really?"
Of course you need to have the proof response ready which is easy with Trump.

(14,490 posts)It's important for our politicians to start using that narrative, including your suggested calmness.
Saying "that's not quite true and I can prove it" just does not have the same psychological punch as using the word "lie".

(112 posts)The mayor said walking away from the Iran nuclear deal made the U.S. "look foolish," and that if he were president, he would seek to rejoin the deal in an effort to stop the country from obtaining nuclear weapons.
"We didnt do the Iran nuclear deal for them. It wasn't a favor. It was something that we did in order to make America safer, and withdrawing from it has made America not only less safe but also less credible the next time we go into a deal," Buttigieg said.
